Hence the word "rental" in my post. Mello was going to be a free agent this summer which is what pressured the Nuggets to move or lose him. It was thrown around that a championship inspired team could trade some 1st round picks for him but you would only have him until the end of the season since he hadn't signed his 3 year extension at the time. Lakers were #1 last year but #6 if I remember correctly for their first championship of the repeat. Boston, Cleveland, Portland, Dallas, and New York had higher payrolls than the Lakers in 2008 and they still won.
