As a Rockets fan this news is bitter sweet...
On one hand he was, at worst, the 2nd best center in the NBA when he could play. On the other hand he was hurt so often the last few years it was hard to improve as a team while still building around who was still your best player.
This will at least allow the team to move on and build knowing he wont be there.
This is it though. If he gets signed and doesn't come through next year, they're going to let him go. It's tough to be objective in Portland about it. One of the local radio guys brought up a good point that if OKC had him and this was going on, we'd be laughing our asses off at them.
At this point it's a 50/50 mix of holding on to him for potential and the fear that they'll let him go only to get healthy and contribute elsewhere.
Yeah, he's been a good player when healthy. Hopefully he can put together a solid enough year that it's worth it for both him and the team to put something together resembling a real contract. But I don't think the NBA can have the heavy incentive contracts in the same way that MLB and the NFL can do for oft-injured players, so it's not like they can say "We'll pay you $5 million base salary and $100,000 for every game you play on top of that." If considerable time or even a full season is lost to the lockout, I'm hoping that it helps the knees of both Brandon Roy and Greg Oden.
I was listening to Isaac and Suke the other day when Suke (or was it Isaac?) said that and thought, "Damn, that's a good point." Back to the old "Damn, I wish the Blazers had landed the #2 pick in the 2007 draft rather than the #1. Odds are we get Durant, or at least we have Oden and never had the possibility of taking Durant."Originally Posted by Eticket
