Try it against 10k needles.![]()
If it is MDT as well, and you wish to see how it stacks with MDT gear, Discoid's an option.
Wonder if it stacks with Earthen Armor.
So our LS BRD just finished Aoidos' Cothurnes +2, the ones with "Scherzo" +1 on them, and I took her out to western altepa cactuar to see what the improvement was, assuming another 1%. Unfortunately, I couldn't replicate Kirschy's results, much less test anything. 1000 needles hit for 1000 each time. I was on PLD, wearing no PDT gear, beating up cactuar with a warp cudgel.
I think this confirms it decides "severely damaging attacks" based off % of your max HP (mine was 1447), and not a straight 1k threshold? Or am I just slowpoke and missed this being confirmed in some other thread?
Sorry for the semi-necro.
Well the talk I saw on Earthen Armor is that the cutoff is 75% HP, so that'd be a starting point. 1314 HP taking 1k damage would be 76% max HP, 1446 would be 69%. I would go test this myself, but said BRD is off watching a movie or something.
Ran additional testing, and you're definitely right. At 1334 HP I received damage reduction from Scherzo, at 1335 HP I did not receive damage reduction. So the attack needs to do roughly 75% damage or more. (I guess I chose a shitty HP to start my tests which lead me to believe it was exactly 1,000 hp -_-) It probably does a check similar to: [Damage Taken < floor(.75(Max HP))] Which explains why 1334 gets the reduction, and 1335 doesn't.
I also tested by having less current HP and higher max HP. 1252/1364 HP. I didn't receive the benefit of Scherzo which means only the damage of the attack and your max HP are considered.
Out of curiosity I then put on a Serket Ring to push my HP below the threshold and I did receive the benefit of Scherzo. Using HP convert gear still counts, unlike sorcerer's ring latent.
Next I tested a small amount of PDT with a lower maximum HP, and they do stack accordingly. So as long as using pdt doesn't push the damage taken below the ~75% mark, you will get the benefits of both.
Lastly, I tried using SV scherzo and found slightly odd behavior. Instead of increasing the potency, it increased the duration. To recount my experience: I SV'd and toss'd scherzo on. After ~2min, I used Troub/Night and re-applied Scherzo to get a "no effect." I repeated once more and got the same "no effect." Scherzo wore off naturalli after ~4min48sec. I managed to get 1k needles to go off twice in this period and only received the normal damage reduction from scherzo.
So, with your most potent scherzo and full hp you would need to take 150% of your max HP worth of damage in order to be one shotted. Nifty. Too bad it offers no protection from TP+normal hits KOs, but if your healers are incredifast that isn't much of an issue.
Might consider using this song on something like briarius lowman.

Took 25 fucking minutes for it to use that damn TP move -_-. Confirmed it works on magic~
I present you with one (1) official dedication to research award.
Kirschy deserves more than 1, just saying.
Mighty awesome work, a friend was wondering how did the song work so this is highly aprecciated.
Is Vitriolic Barrage even magic damage? If it was, shell should reduce it, but I'm quite certain it doesn't. If not, it could be either breath or physical damage, but either way, confirming what kind of damage type should probably have been done first. For a more reliable test against magic damage, the simplest way is probably taking a lower level character to worms somewhere.
Perhaps low maning Gration without shell and maybe some constant -lightning element for insurance? i havent fought him in a long time, but i remember thundaga or burst doing a pretty consistant 1k+ dmg to a taru rdm, Grand Slam can be tested for other physical attack tests, and you can even score a shield out of it?
Vitrolic is magic damage.
