The maps are not of entire planets and the coordinates are not compass degrees. Therefor, (x,y).
The maps are not of entire planets and the coordinates are not compass degrees. Therefor, (x,y).
Anybody who is relating latitude/longitude to promotes (y,x) is retarded. The map grid just has the X axis moved to the top of the grid. It's always (x,y) when reading a grid.
Screw latitude and longitude, and screw (x,y) grid coordinates.
If you really want to relate Eorzea's geographical regions to something relevant in real life, use surveying coordinates.
Township, range, section, quarter-section, quarter-quarter-section, and so on. It's more descriptive of a specific location and more reliable to pinpoint from a given coordinate than lat/long or even x/y.
Imagine:
"Where's the ____ NPC?"
Answer A: 21.6042N, 11.4375E
Answer B: 11.4375, -21.6042
Answer C: SW 1/4, NE 1/4 of Section 16, T21N, R11W, La Noscea Meridian
Two of those responses leave you guessing where exactly .4375 and .6042 of the grid square is. The last one is fairly easy to pinpoint right away.
Then again, you can sort of accomplish the same thing by giving the coordinate of a grid square and say "just a little to NE of the middle of the grid square, but a bit more east than north". Though not quite as exact.
Fuck (x,y), bring polar or spherical coordinate.
[edit]
And don't let mathematician do it, they will shit it up and swap the angle around for no good reason.
Where's my fucking Z coordinate?!
My ban is over so here we go. For all you people saying it is a grid and math class this and down the street up the stairs that. The numbers increase as you go down the map and decrease as you do up (reverse of ffxiv map).
Example of a quick grid and map below (open your map in ffxiv and tell me which any position can possibly fit on)
http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/3525/yyyuc.jpg
It's a grid with only positive numbers (first quadrant). Next?
There we have it a latitude/longitude maps are grids with positive numbers only.
What we have it FFXIV states no official example to citation a coordinate.
People say FFXI used the letter first in a alphanumerical system which was on the x axis and therefor this game must state the x number first.
People say WoW uses a system like that so this game must also, completely disregarding the fact everquest uses the lat/lon style coordinate (and oddly enough also a z axis)
I don't know why without any actual example stating otherwise we would read maps in this game completely different than you you read any map in the real world. Just because it is a game world doesn't automatically mean it is complete opposite of common knowledge.
Logically, it would be (x,y). Illogically, it could be (y,x).
p.s. read and weep.

It was just posted like 10 minutes ago. That ends that debate!
What kind of backwater country is Brittain? in Sweden, coordinates are mandatory to learn at the age of 11-12... I didn't even know there were a single Western country NOT teaching such basic knowledge. They don't teach you graphs in Brittain, or Derivative? Because both of those require knowledge of how to read X, Y coordinates...
What is with this whole logical / illogical parade going on in this thread? It's completely fucking retarded, what the fuck is illogical about using the universally accepted method for reading maps to, you know.. read a map? The level of retardedness in this thread is absolutely mind boggling. This entire thread all along is about how (x,y) is the only logical way to read map coordinates. Fact: it's not. Wanting to be right doesn't make it so.
That being said, since we now have an official standard straight from the source by which to follow, the discussion is over. This was never a "competition" (which you seem to be thinking it was) about which method is better in the context of this game. It was an attempt to get people to unstupify themselves from thinking that for some unknown reason (x,y) is used for absolutely everything. There have been so many fundamental math failures in this thread that it's really facepalm-worthy. I bet you all think that 0.9999... is not equal to 1 also.
In summary:
lat,long is perfectly logical
x,y is also reasonable
SE has standardized on x,y
/thread
You tried to defend that A7 is more logical than 7A, you're just as retarded as the rest of us. Let it go.
For me (though you were quoting mioko), it was a competition, not for you guys but the two idiots on vent with me who like to argue a lot. You have no idea how long I had to listen to them yesterday berating me. XD
Ya but we were right! Suck it! SE does what SE wants regardless of logic so w/e. You win this round Ksandra but we will never get lost in the woods where as you will go the exact wrong direction ROAR!
How is this even still a thing.
