    A question to the crafters

This is a serious question. In no way am I asking this to start any type of flame war. Their's many who enjoy crafting. Their's a ton of profit to be made from it. My question is this:

For those of us who don't find crafting the least bit enjoyable and have no desire to, is this game for us? My reason for asking this is, it seems this game is so revolved around crafting. What about players who want to do nothing but play DoW or DoM classes? I know the answer to this question at this point in time is probably based purely on speculation due to the game being so new but what would your thoughts on this be? I won't go into all the little details as to why some players may choose not to craft since it's everyone's own personal choice. I'm just looking for some feedback on this.

Why do you think you have to craft? You can buy things out of people's bazaar, hopefully the maintenance tonight adds some organization to the market wards.

I know, I was just asking in the sense that maybe this game isn't for those players. I know in XI you could do just fine without leveling a craft (although leveling one meant you were making a ton more gil than the latter). I'm just asking because crafting in this game seems so much more important to the game. Asking almost if we're all meant to at least have something leveled or will we be able to do just fine without it.

Caved and started armorer for Gladiator last night after refusing to even touch one synth up to this point. If you have something else to do at the same time (TV, homework, etc) and just mash buttons it isn't bad.

However I absolutely refuse to mine or harvest or any of that nonsense so it's costing me some money - but it'll still be cheaper in the long run than continuing to pay the hefty mark-ups on Glad. armor.

I don't like the crafting in this game but it's an easy way to plow through physical levels. I did 1-6 Gsmithing and 1-9 armorer and got like ~70,000 physical exp out of it.

In the end it's up to you, but it's not 100% necessary.

I don't particularly enjoy crafting, but if the process wasn't excruciatingly slow in FFXIV I probably would.
You have probably noticed that it's extremely easy to add gil to the economy compared to FFXI.
8 regional + 8 local leves each 2 days are what? Guaranteed 100k added per player on the server? And that's not even factoring random items sold to NPCs.

Sooner or later they'll need to add means to remove the extra gil unless they want each server to reach ridiculous inflation levels.
Crafters are simply taking advantage of that - trying to direct the flow of gil in their hands and enjoy the profits later when/if money is removed from the economy.
Right now the only thing that does that is the repair NPC but given the absurd costs for rank 10+ gear, most people would rather take a crafter to 10-20ish and perform their own repairs. Then we have bazaar fees but a most crafters are going to use the trade function on expensive items instead.

The way I've experienced it, if you don't want to craft you'd better be willing to spend the same amount of time getting money together to buy stuff. That said, it is sometimes better just to buy the item from someone else. The most convenient thing is the ability to do your own repairs, and I'll say up front paying the NPC a ridiculous amount of money to do a half-assed job is not worth staying away from crafting even if it's just for a night or two to get yourself to ~10.

SE very clearly wants players to interact as much as possible, what with that "armorer 10 synth requires leather 25 mat" and "NPC repairs only go to 75% and cost way more than the repair material" stuff, but if you can stomach the grind the game'll be more fun (for certain values of "fun") in the long run if you can just do everything yourself.

Lets be real, you have to craft in FFXIV. Saying you don;t have to is like telling someone they don't have to fly on a plane from New York to London they can swim instead. The answer is true but it is ridiculous.

If you are doing anything that involves combat your weapon will get damaged at a ridiculous speed. 15-20 minutes of grinding and any weapon will be broken. Your 4 options are carry many copies of your weapon with you and keep switching when one breaks, level the craft that fixes it and repair in the field super quick and keep on trucking, 100% of the time be in a party with a friend who leveled the craft and can fix it, or run back to town and pay massive truck loads of money to a NPC who will fix it to only 75%. All 3 are answers but 2 are ridiculous,

You have to craft so get to it.

I think the louder people on these forums are not really interested in being well-rounded. They just want to be "the best" at one thing. They are going to struggle, bitch, and whine about the game that inhibits those who can't broaden their horizons.

Yep you pretty much need to craft. It's beneficial as hell and you might hate it, but it's good for you. Just another way SE is forcing you to play their game.

Shit, they are forcing you to play? They haven't sent anyone over to my place with a gun yet. Should I be worried?!?!

They don't need a gun to do that. All it takes is slapping the name "Final Fantasy" on something and they've done their job.

You better have a lot of good friends if you aren't crafting. Repairs start costing a metric ton once your gear is past 20.

My new Tarred Walking Hat, an Optimal Rank-17 fishing hat from a Rank~10 leve, was ~17,500 for NPC repairs. Buhhhh.

Does anyone know the rough range you have to be in to repair an item? I tried to repair someones Bronze Sollerets and Bronze Haubergeon last night as rank 15 but was unable too. I have no problem with crafter repairs but I wonder how limited the range is for repairs.

What's the performance difference between the three weapon wear ranges 100%~51%, 26%~50%, and 25%~1%? Reason I ask this is, should I keep a weapon at a certain range? Would it be worth it to keep your weapon range from falling between the 51% mark, 26% mark, or waiting until your weapon falls to 1% before repairing?

The theory going around in the BG forum ls is the level to repair is >around< the level of the material used to repair it. I was able to repair a level 16 weapon with my level 6 goldsmith using a brass nugget in two tries using tier 1 synthesis support.
