I gotta be honest and say it was annoying to be preached by Anderson Cooper all week with his righteous indignation. I personally use it often but then again I also swear a lot which is probably due to a limited vocabulary. I do use it as a pejorative but not in the Homosexual sense.

It goes without being said that Bullying should be stop in all aspects. But I swear I almost tossed my fucking remote at the TV whenever AC was on.
To be perfectly honest it's all about the context for me. If it's used in a derogatory manner towards homosexuals, then, yes, it bothers me. Otherwise it's too entrenched in common-lexicon to try and police. As a general term both have lost meaning, much like motherfucker usually doesn't refer to someone who fucks mothers, but a general disapproval with severity. Much of my offense to it just depends on my mood as well. If I'm in a good mood I'll let a lot of things slide, but other times it irks the ever living hell out of me.

This is the quote I was referring too.

    You said 'real gays'.

Technically, the term gay is also supposed to include women, but nobody cares about dykes.

Yes, the problem was that i initially used the word gay to refer only to gay men, and then i switched the meaning to all homosexuals (this means lesbians too). When i said real gays, i was excluding the sort who mess around with people of their own sex for reasons other than attraction, such as lipstick lesbians.

    Sorry for the confusion.

It doesn't bother me one little bit :3 I call things gay all the time...

If you're gonna be uptight and take offence to someone calling someone/you a faggot you need to loosen up a bit, and tell the person to think of someone a bit more unique.

Edits: My manager today was trying to describe Louie Spence (dude from Pineapple Dance Studios who lives up to every gay stereotype possible) to one of the other managers and he was avoiding saying gay/any word to do with homoness because I was in the room... It annoys me the most when people tiptoe round it incase they offend. I'd rather he just bluntly said that he was a raging gay...

I think the thing that's hard for people to grasp is that for a lot of people, the word faggot is as offensive as the n-word would be to a black person. Granted, you definitely hear gays call things "faggy" all the time (but hey, we're allowed to say it) but without question this is the most hurtful word you can use to describe someone who is gay/bi/whatever.

People saying something is "gay" to imply it's uncool is something of a lost cause, since people use it all the time and at this point it's almost as semantically bleached as the word "gypped".

Interestingly enough, it's only been around 20-30 years since the word "Queer" was used as a pejorative almost as interchangably as the word "fag". However there was a big movement in the gay community to "reclaim" the term (I am sure there are scholarly articles about it somewhere) and now it's actually a word that's lost almost all of its original connotation.

edit: also, the word faggot is a lot like the n-word in that although most people would be very offended if they heard it in person, both terms are used extremely often on the internet in places like 4chan/forums without any reaction from anyone at all

It's impossible to react on the internet to the words faggot and gay used negatively. It happens so often that you'd be insulted every waking moment so you have no choice but to learn to deal with it.

yeah that's for sure, it's the same with the N-word really, but I definitely think most of the people who use those words on the internet would probably never say them in public, whatever the reason may be

Anonymity on the internet lets people say all the things they'd never say in real life.

I don't mind the word "gay", I used it myself sometimes (and I'm gay) but I don't think the word "faggot" is ever appropriate for use in any situation.

I call shit gay and faggy and queer more than any of my straight friends ;x

I get more annoyed when said friends try not to use such words around me.

I don't really care when someone calls me a faggot, since I call myself it more often. But of course, I've only been called it in a playful manner and not a deragatory one, so I don't know for sure.

I agree with all of this, except I have and it really didn't bother me lol. Was funny more than anything since it's such an easy thing to go for... if you're gonna throw names at people may as well think of something more intresting than "amg fuck off you faggot."
