It's an ethical question. If they can prove that he's mentally deranged and was not aware of his actions or their consequences, or that he was driven by forces not under his control, then it's not ethical and very dangerous to place him in an institution (prison) without the necessary staff or resources to manage his illness. Being involuntarily committed is the better route, because the problems that caused (in the eyes of the law) his actions can be treated rather than contained. In a prison he'd only be a danger to himself and others.

with the amount of money we spend on each convicts and asylum patient, i don't see how putting a mentally insane people in prison so they kill each other is such a bad idea.

Ehh, working in a jail has made me realize the majority of the people who go for insanity due it intentionally and are not as mentally ill as they make themselves out to be. In there eyes they would rather spend a potential bit more time in custoday and ensure they have a private room, and better overall living conditions. I guarantee whatever cot you get in a mental/psyche ward will be better than the 2" thick matress pad and blanket you get to sleep with.
