SWG had potential, but SOE ruined it.

Although it was a bit too sandbox-ish from the very beginning.

It also shared a very common problem with the sandbox games of it's time... it was ugly as hell. Compared to XI which came out around the same time..

You don't understand the point of this discussion. The issues are not being confused for each other, they are ultimately having the same effect and people playing are blaming both of the effects on just server/client communication.

    1) SE's crappy code and individuals' slow connections cause lag in the menus alone. (unavoidable)

    2) graphic settings being too high can cause graphic lag in everything. (avoidable)

A lot of people are experiencing both, which compounds the effects of #1 into looking worse than it actually is. If you deal with #2 first, you're only going to experience the raw connection lag with the client/server communication with every menu/command, and yes, it is definitely there (there's no denying it). The thing is, a lot of people are completely oblivious to #2, and inflating the issue greater than it really is. I have my graphics settings set to a point where I don't really experience any graphic lag outside of severe overcrowding. Thus, while I can see the menu lag in just about everything you do, it's no where near as severe as most people are bitching about... EXCEPT for the massive delay between choosing a Local Leve recipe and the ingredients appearing in the crafting boxes. That is the only instance where the lag is as unbearable/ridiculous/absurd/etc. as most people are describing everything involving menus.

It's unfortunate to see FFXIV flop as bad, if not worse, than I was expecting it to. I really, REALLY enjoyed FFXII and FFXIII and I think nostalgia is the only thing that makes me consider 7/9 better games. A combination of FFXII and FFXIII will create just about the perfect game for me. FFXII was mostly amazing because it was a fluid combat system fairly similar to FFXI. If they went back and reprogrammed FFXI to have no interface lag and be as smooth in gameplay as WoW is, I'd probably have reactivated my subscription during my WoW downtime and be playing FFXI instead of posting in this thread.

The job/subjob combinations and gear swapping offers a lot of great variety in random play, which I enjoyed a lot, even if I didn't do it a whole ton. I've been wanting to go back to play THF/DNC just for shits and giggles, but I know as soon as I sign in everything will be clunky and slow and I'll rage and quit by the time I finish my million macros.

I wonder how SE is actually reacting to how terrible the game is going, I really, really hope it is doing just as poorly in Japan, because if it is still successful in Japan they'll never learn.

Well, I try to understand where you're coming from but watching some vids in HD it still looks horrible. Better than I remembered though.

Patch came out yesterday and they're already admitting fault and going to try and fix things.

I wish SE would take a page from Blizzard's PR book.
To people wondering what I wanted from Lodestone in the other thread, this is a perfect example of what I hoped would happen. SE is having daily manager meetings with people from all over the world? Well post some of your thoughts! Are you happy with random SP gain? Accuracy on melee classes? Mob placement? The random nature of leves? ('sup level 17 gold being offered 5 level 1 leves but my level 7 armorer being offered 3 level 15 ones). There's a fun game somewhere in ff14 and I sometimes get to see it but ugh, SE don't help themselves

I once thought that way. Then I realized there was a reason why it was for soccer moms and teenagers...

I'm sure a great many videogame players enjoy 12 hours of Red Dead Redemption or CoD PVP, but I always thought that, too, was just boring as fuck.

As simple as it sounds, it would make a world of a difference if they wrote their English update notes with some personality and were less cryptic about "implementing counter-measures." I understand the whole Eastern vs Western culture regarding business/customer relations, but shit, if they could translate the writing in the game as well as they did, they could translate some update notes so they say something besides "X has been changed, Y has been changed, and Z has been changed."

I'd rather they didn't say shit, didn't give us their preliminary opinions, didn't base their opinions off of one or two days of gameplay, and when it was eventually fixed, it was fixed the right way, for good. I don't care about their motivations or their logic. Fix it. Fix it right. I don't need the people running the game to act like we're old friends, chatting it up and having a beer or something.

I don't think it's that easy. If they start to improvise, in the worst case they might miss the meaning of the update. If the Japanese notes say "X has been changed, Y has been changed" I don't think they can or should really add much to that.

In the end this is the only thing that matters. If they are good at developing, it doesn't matter what they say- things will be corrected. If they are bad, talking about their 'wrong' opinions definitely doesn't help either, it might even make the situation worse.

Weird personal preference, when considering 3 seconds of waiting for the gates to open during PVP in WOW is more exciting than 5 hours of anything in FFXIV.

Can't believe we're already playing the waiting game again, this reminds me back when WOTG was new and it was in march on the eve of the most fail content patch to ever grace MMO history.

This game will have to make major strides before I even think about picking up this masochistic pile of junk again.

This does work in conjunction with your sig. Which seems like a double negative.

What does a developer being clear in their intent and design have to do with target audience? You can still keep FF14 aimed at whoever the fuck it's aimed at while releasing notes which say "we don't like how XYZ is panning out, we plan on doing ABC about it".

They can't be as clear as you'd like them to be. They can give general directions (which they have) but their plans seem to be never set in stone before very close to the update day. They also have a "wait and see what happens" approach to many changes.

Example: VanaFest it was announced that PUP gets A h2h skill.

2 weeks later: Pup got B h2h skill.

It's either a case of "SE lied to us QQ" or "SE never tells us enough QQ"

People assumed A skill for pup, SE merely state they were looking into raising its h2h skill. This is even more of a reason to have clear communication with the playerbase. Something like: "We read the feedback, we know there are n1, n2... n problems, we are working on them". Instead we get: "We appreciate feedback, stay tuned more updates coming, oh and shit you pick during character creation is useless yet".

    From POL:

In addition, the hand-to-hand combat rating of puppetmasters will be raised from rank C to A, making them formidable combatants in their own right.

Again, if we want them to be more clear, be prepared for shit like this. They tell us their current plans in detail, then change it a week before the update.
