They need to introduce new people to the genre either way. Using WoW's massive playerbase is just retarded when you have millions of sheeps ready to dive in as is. If they weren't interested in WoW before, I doubt Cata will change much.
Except Cata is meant to be a reboot that lures new blood to the game while keeping those hardcores/long-timers paying and playing.

The problem with many MMOs is that as they get older, people are reluctant to buy them because they feel that they'll be lost in the well-established world. With a reboot like cata you'll be able to experience a whole "new" world while heading towards new and fresh goals that even the most seasoned player has never experienced before.

No it's not the same thing.

Just recently a fuckton of JP players went to WoW who had never played it before. Because WoW was never marketed to Japan, and it took awhile for people to make addons that translated it into Japanese. And guess what, they are liking it. And most of them had never played before, or if they did played it for a short while (a day) and quit because it was too hard for them to understand.

    So, you are wrong.

Old game doesn't have the same appeal as a new one, reboot or not.

Sure, it might bring some new blood to the game. I am skeptical that it will happen in any large scale however.

"A fuckton". Are we talking about hundreds of thousands here? I doubt a Western game has suddenly been so well-received over there.

That's kinda shallow imo.. Old games offers just as much content if not morem than new game. Limiting yourself to new release make little sense, unless all you're looking for is next gen graphic.

Old game? WoW is still dominating the market with 10million subs and the reskinning of zones only adds to new players wanting to jump in. Barring any cataclysms (lol), WoW will probably tack on at least another quarter million subs (new people and returners).

They've reskinned the vanilla and marketed this thing as the chance for new players to join the tried 'n true World of Warcraft. Do you really think there wont be a significant boost in subs from this? Especially with so many people annoyed with Square-Enix for the flop that XIV has been?

We can compare XIV to the XI launch but this isn't 2002 and people aren't going to wait years for the game to mature when XI wasn't particularly well recieved by the mainstream. When the JP are up in arms against their own SE diety, you know shit has hit the fan.

I know, but do you think there is no truth to this statement? As silly as it is, since old games tend to be better in this genre.

What are you asking exactly? If I believe it's normal to be interested in new game more than old one?

Like I said, I don't think it's justified unless you're looking for a better visual experience. I personally play all my games many years late because I'm a cheap mofo who doesnt like wasting money, but my anticipation rarely fade after the release (unless of course everyone hate, but the opposite is also true). What I'm looking for is an entertaining experience, and release date has very little to do with it.

Hyan, have you ever tried WoW? I think you should give it a shot after Cataclysm's release (whether or not you have).

I think this game is just screwed regardless because you couldn't of picked a worse time to have a bad release of a game. Too many new mmo's coming out along with cataclysm for this game to recover in the west. They don't have the time to scrap/remedy all the dumb design choices they made with 14 because they have to start adding content fast.

Game will be an afterthought in the west but I see the japanese players keeping the game afloat.

I don't get it, Hyan, you just sound jaded to me. And it doesn't even sound like white knighting to me, just more like you going against the grain for the sake of it. I am pretty confident that a lot of WoW players are anxious for a better mmo experience, but the fact is that nothing has delivered long term. Things have been released incomplete, even if their starting experience is great. WoW's fortune was that it was one of the few mmo's in the market at the time, so they had a chance to grow before ppl jumped ship. XI was the same way. But too much greatness is out there now-a-days for ppl to look at new mmo's in the same way.
    I don't get why you can't even agree w/this

XIV's downfall was SE's own ego. If they didn't ignore beta testers the game would of been in a much better state. and in before ppl say "how do you know they didnt listen to beta testers?!" It's obvious they didn't because of such glaring shortcomings that have been mentioned since alpha and were not addressed. If they were smart they would of listened to beta testers more and waiting until the ps3 version was ready to release the pc version.

Remember when FF11 was an elaborate marketing plan by Blizzard during the 18 hour PW/Salvage bannings? Time to add 14 to that list.

We've had this discussion a few pages ago. I don't know if its bitterness over the fact that his dream-concept of a game will never see the realistic light of day or what, but yeah...

Funny thing about the salvage ban thing is I know quite a few people hit by that who just bought another character and kept kicking in XI... I wouldn't say it was a huge ad for WoW, lol.
That aside, I'm pretty sure they ban cheaters in WoW too.

At the same time, it would have been an absolute perfect time to release a finished and polished game, with nothing on the horizon for months and months.

Had they waited until March, they probably would have gotten better reviews and had a more complete game, but i can't see it staying afloat in the midst of 3 or 4 other MMO's coming out around then.

When the core of your game in not fun, i don't see more content being a remedy for that.

Perhaps with an extra 6 months worth of beta they could have rebuilt some of the fundamentals, but i'm not sure if that's even possible in that amount of time.

Do we have numbers on that Japanese WoW jump or is it entirely speculation based on some 2ch post?

I think just the post. I will have to ask my friend who's been reading some blog about it. According to him they're loving it though.

I am sure they are, but what is important is how many since you seem to think it is a fuckton(and there is 0 proof of more than one at this point).
