@Hyan: So are you going to try out WoW after Cataclysm?

Edit: I can't help it that topics involving FFXIV are filled with ignorant, close-minded morons.

I assume whenever SE gets their shit together that phasing will be a part of the storyline in the future. It never happened in XI due to the age of the game and the PS2 holding things back but with the specs that XIV demands and the PS3, phasing events shouldn't be an issue.

When you save the world, NPCs should treat you differently even if it just happens to be a new set of text and a 10% discount on goods sure but it's the little things like helping say a farmer npc herd some animals should result in meager repeatable rewards. Something along the lines of a daily food reward as a measure of friendship between your character and the people they happen to encounter would help to give some depth to the game.

I think another legitimate complaint regarding XI is that most of the seasonal events suck/ed.

Sure, you had Blitz Buffalo where you got knocked across zones with snort or the event where you were warped on a level 1 to a random high level zone but for the most part the events were nothing approaching a feeling where players needed to drop what they were doing and participate.

Even Besieged which was designed to be an event where players helped out the NPCs beat back beastmen hordes turned out to be not quite immersive enough. All of the server warnings and the ability to track the beastmens movements over hours made the event entirely too predictable and ruined any sense of accomplishing anything. Being able to hide in WG and avoid combat also made the event optional when you were supposed to be traveling in a war-torn land.

At inception the penalties for losing were harsh in Besieged (no EXP bonus) but the system never rewarded players for going on the offense and attacking the beastmen at their homebases. Zones like Mamook and Arrapago Reef were visually appealing but lacked any real substance with regards to taking out the leaders of the supposed hordes. If you defeat Medusa, the rewards should have been far larger than just a title and a short delay in her presence at Besieged. Hell, the beastmen would walk to town but defeating them outside the city rewarded players with nothing.

These are some of the things XIV needs to address if it wants to completely vaporize XI. If you want to desecribe a land as war-torn, then you need to actually design the area as such.

And guess what, you're fucking stupid for thinking either of those things, let alone both. And don't even say you're not trying to say that because you just implied that all that's going to happen is lame instance additions and pointless f2p cash shop additions (both of which would actually be better than FFXIVs offerings at the moment, sadly).

EDIT: You're also implying that the quality of all Korean grindfest games is guaranteed to be low. Some of them (Grand Fantasia, for example) aren't so bad... they just have a ton of fucking grind to them. FFXIV is so far behind so many of these games that they only need 1-2 updates a year to stay a mile ahead of XIV for the next year at the very least.

You might want to rework your response and try not to be so damn dumb next time.

Oh, how witty~ Have a cookie.

The facts don't change no matter how much you struggle. Whatever changes SE implements make the game better than whatever these Korean grinders can come up with in the same timeframe. F2P doesn't even have a chance, but neither do the P2P ones.

Implementing new content on top of the already plentiful existing content doesn't make that game that much better, but implementing content when none of it exists currently has a much greater impact on the game. At some point SE is going to catch up, because all these other games can do is build on top of the already existing foundation which hardly matters in the long run after a certain point. Their features are not "getting better", at least at the same speed that SE's features are. This should be simple enough for even someone like you to comprehend, but I am willing to dumb it down even more if needed.

Although, I gotta admit this twitter update Aion is getting soon is making me nervous.

You're also implying that the quality of all Korean grindfest games is guaranteed to be low.
Hm, not low. More like "more of the fucking same". You could say these two go hand-in-hand though. You can play one of them and get bored of all of them at the same time.. it's amazing, really.

You obviously haven't played many, shut the fuck up.

Aika isn't like Grand Fantasia which isn't like Lineage which isn't like Tales Weaver which isn't like (though looks similar to) Ragnarok Online, etc etc etc
Could go on all day with this list.

And hey, guess what... all of those games got/get updates far more often than you'd think.

When do you finally realize it doesn't matter? lol

But yes, I have played many of them. Some of them have an interesting gimmick or two that make them "different" from each other (Atlantica Online comes to mind!). Maybe for a simple fellow like you that is enough.

Fuck all this noise. I'm switching to Maple Story.

lol, if you think the only difference between those games are simple gimmicks, you're even more retarded than I thought.

...Unless by gimmick you mean fundamentally different in nearly every way including art style, music, controls and focus of gameplay (like where Aika is more PvP focused and also raising your Pran is a very important part of the game) where as Tales Weaver is a fucking POINT AND CLICK game with no pets and is very story focused (with each character having their own scenario similar to XI's countries) with no pets and is more based on racking up high combos, PvE and customizing your character's looks.)

Even compared to Ragnarok Online, which Tales Weaver is most similar to, the character progression(aside from the kill shit, gain exp that's pretty much standard), combat system and actual story focus make it a pretty different game in its own right. Luckily there's more of a difference than that between the two for people who want to mix it up!

(and sorry you disagree but update frequency certainly does matter)

Face it, you simply don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Just give it up.

I can't say for the examples you mentioned, but it has been always the case for every korean MMO I've tried, although RO makes for a good exception I had forgot.

Looks like there are more of these games than I initially thought however. I've only played like, 20 to 30 of them.

Anyway, these games still have awful quality and focus on grind and that's probably why they all bore the hell out of me. I'm glad to hear you can somehow find them enjoyable.

(and sorry you disagree but update frequency certainly does matter)
Nope, and I already told you why. Is "Nu-uh" all I'm going to get for an answer?

Oh, look, it's retard time with hyan, BRP, miokomioko.

It's hilarious when you're the only three idiots who defend this massive piece of shit.

Anyhow, there's no fucking way in the world the frequency at which they add content and fix bugs/retool content doesn't matter in leaving FFXIV in fucking dust. It matters for FFXIV too.
I'm really wondering what the stupidest thing you'll say in this thread is going to be.

I like FFXIV, but I see no point in defending it to a people who don't give a shit.

Not everyone who has bad things to say don't give a shit about people with an opposing view (although there are/have been plenty of them around). Although, I do have to say, while there are plenty of cool concepts in place, I can't imagine how XIV is holding anyone's attention past the first 10~ hours. I do believe it's pretty horrible at the moment, for being a "Retail ready" MMO.

I do concede though that I've definitely noticed a fair amount of people make 1-2 posts randomly in this thread and others defending the game or telling the detractors to stfu, so saying they're the only ones defending it is ignorant. Insulting people (which shouldn't be necessary anyway) without specific reasons and quotes (that make sense) is also stupid, both by people talking shit about the game and people defending it. Opinions are opinions and subjective, on both sides. Especially since there are two people obviously missing from that list of 3 (that I notice, anyway), and I'm not entirely sure why BRP is listed in it since defending the game (for the most part) isn't exactly what he's been doing. Defending the class system isn't really defending the game at all.

I, at least, am also plenty willing to change my mind if I'm convinced otherwise about something. Those update notes definitely have me hopeful again and as long as they actually function as they sound and some of the things mentioned (like adjustments to SP gain) don't just leave things broken or break it in a different way, I'll be playing again at least from mid-December till PS3 release. The early '11 (and possibly, if separate) March updates together will likely decide me one way or another for the remaining duration of 2011 (and probably till a strong alternative is offered, which could happen as soon as Guild Wars 2 or possibly not for years). I'm definitely looking forward to playing the game in December, even if it did/will take a little while to reach that point after release.

Out of curiosity, when did you play WoW for the last time?

Some of the new areas are pretty impressive visually. Graphics quality is never going to be as good as recent release, but the art directions isnt that bad if you enjoy sightseeing. The real issue imo are shitty character models/animation, but you get used to it eventually.

I'm not sure if like temporary events as well because it feel like I'm missing out on something when they are removed. However, they are pretty good from a storytellling perspective.

Not to defend his point or attack yours, but I've got to say that the art direction with WoW was the biggest reason that I never played it. I remember really enjoying Warcraft 2, and looking forward to Warcraft 3 (although for some reason I never saw any screenshots or trailers prior to it's release, I don't remember why). Then, when it was released, I just couldn't stand the way they moved to 3D, I couldn't even finish the game. Then they (more or less) went in the exact same direction with the art for World of Warcraft.

Usually art isn't a huge deal to me and I can kinda roll with the punches, although I have my preferences like anybody else. I'm not really sure what it is, but I've considered playing several times over the years (including recently, with the horrible launch of XIV), and some of the areas/stuff look alright, but I always end up seeing some screenshots of some character models or dragons or other areas or something that makes me blanch and just get completely turned off by the game.

Quality of graphics doesn't change the style/direction of the art used, is my point I guess.

I was talking about the art directions for the new areas, not the characters.

    [edit]
You can't judge WoW graphics on the screenshots alone. They will never do the game any justice because of the low polygon count/poor mapping/clipping. What make up for it is the large amount of movements in everything (lightning effect, shadow, mechanical/magical device), particles effects, the proportion (the world make you feel puny when you walk around), etc.

    [edit]
Also, WoW look terrible in most screenshots. The graphics alone arent good. However, the game make up for it with the large quantity of thing in movement, the particles effects, the high frame rate and various little details that cant be seen in a screenshot....
Oh, that isn't all it is, I've seen videos and watched people play before as well. It isn't just the characterss, it's the style, although I will admit it's more the models than the rest. But you can't really play the game without a character or dealing with npcs or killing mobs, eh? The effects and everything else can be nice, and I've seen some pretty scenery, but yeah.

World of Warcraft's art direction is some of the most sophomoric crap I've ever seen in such a popular game.
