Yeah, I'm pretty much at a loss too. They may have done some little bit, but it's so little that it's pretty obvious that the money they allotted for marketing was pretty slim.

Maybe it's just me, but I think it's a fantastic idea. Gives you a chance to explore the "huge world", yet after you've already explored it you aren't forced to waste time wandering through it every time you want to get somewhere just as a time waster. It doesn't really mean they've wasted the money, since there can still be a lot of things to do throughout all of it, reasons to go back to each area, and it isn't like you won't ever wander around just because you're bored or can. The money isn't wasted simply because you're only forced to travel through it the long way once, imo. But this way traveling isn't there just as a way to waste time, and since they aren't dependent on monthly payments, they don't have that as a reason to drag out every little thing we do to artificially limit (to some extent) what we can accomplish in a single session of play.

Also, is it known that we can do that ourselves? I really have paid very little attention to what is going on with GW2 other than a couple random videos and what's been mentioned here, honestly. But I agree with Shaskoru, it looked to me like a dev build or enabled GM power or something when I watched it. Although I'm not against the idea of being able to teleport that way at all. It also looked like he was teleporting inside of the same region or something, so maybe there are limits we didn't see?

Of course it's not without any benefits. I'm just saying it's stupidly inefficient to first build a large world only to try to figure out how we could make it as convenient as possible for the players to travel in this large world when the concept of large world is inconvenient in itself. It's a fight against your own design. If traveling without (nearly) instant teleporting is such a taboo what is the efficient thing to do?

GW1 handled it pretty well imo.

And as long as the majority of gameplay isn't based on instances it's not as bad as it could be.

Even some minor limitations and maybe some kind of swift mounted travel would be even better. It's nice having that large world, all that space and stuff to explore and wander through a few times though. It surely wouldn't be as fun if everything was compacted down into fewer areas. But it gets to be a drag eventually, maybe they just realize that and are willing to try something new/risky to see how it turns out. Maybe there are level requirements to it in each region or something, who knows. I get what you're saying though.

I'll probably end up getting it once it's out simply because it looks interesting and won't require a subscription, so I could play it on/off for as long as I wanted even while playing XIV or whatever else. Was never really interested by the first one, so I guess I'll see how it goes.

I got the email the other night that the free trial was ending, and shortly after that I cancelled my account (basically I didn't have the money available to pay for it.) I've pretty much had no urge to login since mid-october.

I've been playing a bit of wow lately because wraith of the lich king looked like it had a good story, but the entire time i've been playing wow i've wanted to go back to FFXI really badly.

I just miss some of the difficulty FFXI used to have, I miss redoing cop mission, I miss getting raped every time I aggro something, I miss the learning curve and the drama. I hope SE can deliver a similar experience with FFXIV as soon as possible. Other than that I guess i'm going to lurk until PS3 release, unless they come out with a curve ball in december/early 2011.

I feel the same way about wanting to go back to XI every now and then. I had more fun exploring West Ronfaure in XI then I did running from Gridania to Uldah to Limsa... I realize it's just nostalgia calling though.

I still have hope for XIV, unfortunately. Not enough hope to sub, but enough to watch the game from afar. I doubt the game will ever be as interesting as XI was, however. Just too many bad decisions along the way. Hopefully this game wont end SE's MMO foray. Rather I'm hoping they cancel or tone down any expansion plans and instead work to push out a new MMO in the next 2 years or so. Same engine, same reqs, (more optimized hopefully), and focusing around a more medieval type world with a more traditional job system. They could simply call it XI's spiritual successor, an easy way to save face from XIV. Wishful thinking I know.

The hardest and most time consuming part of developing any game, and especially an MMO, is content production. There's no way what you just described would happen. Not only would it take more than 2 years, but they'd be throwing away the most time consuming and costly part of the work they did for 14.

That's not wishful thinking, that's called lunacy.

MMO's are not made with tons of content at the get go, because they can't spend that time, like Bruiser said. No MMO launched has ever had very much content at all. They build stuff into the game at a steady pace(hopefully) and then down the road you have a good chunk of content coming in every 4-5months usually

Why does a game HAVE to have a traditional job system with labels? There's nothing wrong with the skill mashuping right now in FFXIV where you are able to make what you want instead of being held to certain abilities depending on what you chose to level up or are currently.

Because I like job systems? I mean if you like XIV's system that's great, I just don't. I think I'd be a fan of a class system that eventually branches off to a job system, but the class system by itself is just a boring timesink in my opinion.

As for the "wishful thinking", it was just wishful thinking... Everyone knows SE can't develop a game in less then 7 years. Mainstream MMO's have, however, been started and finished in less then 2 years - DAoC for example (18 months). Sure most are probably around 4-5 years, especially today, but I'd take a new FF MMO in 5 years over watching them desperately try to save face with XIV. Also I understand MMO's launch with little content, content isn't my issue with XIV. My issue with XIV is that it's not fun. I have more fun playing minecraft; which costs a whopping $15, was developed by 1 person, and doesn't have a monthly charge.

Cancel till some things are updated to show them via numbers what they need to do. If they see people drop off, then suddenly surge back after Dec/PS3 updates/released they will get a message. Personally I MIGHT subscribe for 1 month till December, but i'm not totally sure. I wish my free time was done around Dec 7ish then id just hop to Cataclysm and see what SE could pull. The Nov Update better be before the 20th though.

It's the scary truth of releasing a game in such a bad state. idk about deadlines or any of that shit, if the game is so for from ready then you push back that deadline. Only thing SE has accomplished is giving XIV the lowest score of any FF entry, one of the lowest scored mmo's of all, and making ppl not want to play the game and most likely not look back to care if the game does get better. They had everything to lose by releasing the game when they did and nothing to gain.

That's pretty rough about server population. I just did a search on mine, 1k people online (Besaid) around 7ish pm EST.

Getting people around your level AND the right job combo AND interested AND not too close to level (before sync) took long enough. Maybe too long. But getting a working party and getting a few levels, even if it was only 4k/hour, made eveyr party member feel valuable and needed. It was a fight against the game, and many of use won't settle for less difficulty. CoP, the end.

Kaylia, your bastardization of English is amazing keep it up. You are exactly the type of childish idiot I envisioned was sitting behind the keyboard of some of the people I used to play WoW with.

Cata comes out Dec.7. Will you still be plaguing these forums after that?

Edit: Reading Kaylias posts reminds me of some of the hilariously retarded things President Bush used to say.
