Bought this on PC, played through in two sittings, and I felt it was a pretty damn good game. New Dante is cool. The gameplay is as good as any of the previous entries in the series. It's also got some humor and a better story (imo, anyways) than I was expecting. I didn't bother upping the difficulty, which I should have, because it WAS pretty damn easy, and I suck pretty hard I didn't unlock all the trials and stuff cuz I was playing to see the story, but overall, I have no problem recommending this game.

On PC, I ran it at the highest settings and that shit was fucking gorgeous.

Well, point I was making is that PC release of Devil May Cry 4 was quite a bit later then the console versions. This time around we were only looking at a week and a half difference in releases, and a fair portion of early reviews said that the PC version was the best, which could sway buyer decision making.

Chances are this game will also start seeing buyers based off word of mouth. Alot of people were turned off initially by the internet ranting, but now that people are realizing it's actually not a bad game some of those buyers on the fence will take the plunge (I didn't order mine on Steam until early last week once I saw comments from people saying it was a solid enough game.

It's better then 2, but definitely inferior to the rest of the series.

The game is definitely in need of a wall jump as well, even if it would be kind of useless.

I liked the wall running in 2. Was pointless but I just ran up to walls for the hell of it and did rain storm.

It was pretty cool and having a DT form where you could actually truly fly was pretty neat too.
2 had some pretty neat stuff sprinkled in but it was overall kinda... not that great.

I'm curious as to why people think the gameplay is that horrific compared to the other DMCs? >.>

Not horrific, just notably worse, to claim otherwise is laughable. There is far less depth to the combos, every weapon has a smaller pool of moves, cancelling might as well not exist because you'll randomly get locked in the recovery animation of an attack (this is literally the only reason I ever get hit so far, so rage inducing), lack of lock on makes it feel clumsy at times and no style system lowers the variety of skills even further. It's a good game, in fact it's much better than most other action games imo. It's just a step back from DMC3 and 4 in the gameplay department.

I ended up picking this up for PC after watching YoVideogames's play through of it. I enjoyed it. I wouldn't say the combat is bad at all, but it's not Devil May Cry combat. Not so much because "this combat is worse", it just doesn't feel as rewarding or satisfying. A lot of the moves don't end up have the same feel of impact. It's a fun game, but I just wish there was some more depth to certain parts of it. Overall I liked it. It will be... interesting to see where the Devil May Cry series goes from here.

The combat is definitely worse. I touched on it in an earlier post, but the combat is just sloppy and killing stuff doesn't feel all that satisfying. None of the weapons are cool or memorable, the game is incredibly easy and the button config is far more awkward than it needs to be.

Specific dodges (angel and demon) aren't exactly intuitive to perform unless you have that weapon on, which makes flowing between offence and defence rough while trying to juggle multiple weapon and firearm switches. Trying to use firearms in combat is messy because sometimes you'll get demon/angel pull instead (especially if you're switching styles a lot). Which also reminds me that apart from the last gun you get, guns are fucking useless for damage, crowd control, combos, style and whatever other use you can think of. Devil Trigger is cool but it doesn't last that long and takes fucking ages to charge (also, I don't think it carries between levels), I think I've used it like 3 times? Two of which were mandatory. Angel and Demon only enemies are fucking gay and I hated it. It really makes the moveset limits obvious when you have about 10 attacks between two weapons to kill something with AND NOTHING ELSE WORKS. Yawn. And yeah, the movesets were extremely disappointing and apart from a couple of attacks which I really liked, none were really notable and upgrading them didn't seem to matter. I haven't mentioned lock-on yet because everyone should realise that lock-on is needed. I dunno how many times I threw a round trip (or axe head, dart etc) at some useless shit because Donte doesn't wanna fucking aim where I tell him to.

There are some nice touches to combat, like being able to do the first half of a combo with one weapon and do the second half of the combo with another (scythe/Rebellion > axe is nice, so is ending with ninja star pull-in). That's probably the best thing I can say about the combat system (and it's ruined by angel/demon onry enemies), though doing long ass aerial combos with Angel Pull is nice too, but ultimately it feels too easy and doesn't give me the boner I require from doing something so awesome.

Randomly I love Feed from the scythe (where after you attack for a bit it glows), that shit is so shiny I can't help it. Speaking of shiny, the nightclub level is probably one of the most impressive levels and overall the game was beautiful and the levels were (mostly) well designed.

The characters are pretty bland and uninteresting, and even though Donte was a dick douche he was still memorable for that. By the end of the game he's a blubbering emo rather than a badass, so they kinda got his character and development totally wrong. GG NT GG. Vergil I thought was pretty cool despite being totally different in character, there were still lots of parts you could recognize which is more than I can say for Donte overall. Kat was as pathetic as all other NT secondary characters are, not only did I roll my eyes at her back story but they made her weak, marginally useful and scared, give her a moment of strength, some deus ex machina bullshit plan and finally after all that, she hides in (or near) a bin for the final battle. She's all over the fucking place, say what you will about Trish or Lady (actually, Lady is awesome so shut up) but at least they were consistent and strong.

Forgot to mention the story. It was pretty good, I can't say if it was a step above the other DMCs (3 and 4) in terms of actual plot and progression, but the presentation was definitely on-par if not better. Despite Donte looking like an asshole, the facial expressions and body movement were excellent. The levels seemed to drag the story on unnecessarily, every time I thought we were going someplace it just ended up the same location and the story would creep forward. Donte's character arc was far to abrupt, I mean if he's going to end up that way you could at least make his initial personality reflect that a little (they pretty much do it with Vergil as well, lol). and in terms of a villain and a setting I thought both were done well conceptually, but the Mundus stuff near the end was pretty weak. I would've liked to see more done with Limbo, it was badass and cool, but it didn't feel like there was enough constant contrast between the two worlds (also the rules of Limbo seem fucktarded). Overall I liked the story, but I don't think it rates better than 3 or 4 if you're looking at just movie versions.

Music is terrible, really terrible, but oddly enough I didn't mind it when I was in game. Certain tracks are really intrusive and terrible so you notice them, but for the most part you don't really notice the music and even if you do you gotta admit it kinda fits.

This game really makes me appreciate the old characters even more. Funny enough Dante was the least terrible imo. I actually didn't find him memorable at all. I felt he was blank enough that if NT was given another go with DmC they could pretty much take his personality anywhere (closer/further from old Dante). Kat was pretty awful I completely agree with that. The one character butchering I just couldn't get over was Vergil. Vergil was a fantastic character in DMC3. Things like slashing Dante's out stretched hand while descending into hell made him seem amazing even in defeat. In contrast DmC's Vergil actually made me groan when he cries out "Dante, Do something!" while being useless during the Mundus encounter. I understand the thought process behind keeping his involvement secret from Mudus but even after he's revealed he is weak and pathetic.

I honestly don't remember how well the characters in Heavenly Sword were characterized and I never played Enslaved but were they as bad as this? I know they used freelance writers on those games and I believe DmC was written in house maybe that's it.

Also since you mentioned the character movements. I agree the mocap was pretty good until the end. Pretty much any scene that Vergil handles the katana (stabbing the hell gate, stabbing Mundus in the back, drawing his sword) looks awful.

No qualms about Lady. She was awesome.

I thought the whole premise of Trish was stupid and screams Oedipus.

But my real grudge with her is the fact that she's the reason I don't get to rock the Sparda sword in DMC2/4. No, don't tell me 'if you complete it with both Dante and Lucia, you get to use Trish with the Sparda'. Listen to what you're asking.

..But she was cool in the anime.

Still glad to see her go.

Yeah, Donte is bland in the sense that whatever personality they want to give him is still boring shallow enough you never really believe it so it could change to whatever. That's what annoys me most even though I agree, because at least the original Dante had a strong personality despite it being shallow and kinda one-dimensional for the majority of all DMCs (except 2, lol).

I liked Vergil mostly because while he's totally different in story than DMC3 Vergil (who is a badass), I kinda liked how determined and ruthless he was. He was mostly interesting because you could see how he thought and felt about people and I actually liked his 'weakness' and relying on Donte. You could kinda sense he could deal with the demons and was frustrated because he needed to rely on Donte to keep his cover. Saying all this is well and good, because I don't think they did whatever they set out to do with all the characters properly (and Limbo, though that's more gameplay), but Vergil is the most interesting to me simply because of this.

Don't get me wrong, they butchered Donte and Vergil completely (and funnily enough kept Vergil's fighting style intact) but in terms of who I liked most it's probably Vergil. Oh, did forget to mention I hate how Vergil looks now and his fighting stance for the most part looked so rigid. In terms of appearance and style the old Vergil was probably better than Dante, though maybe I'm biased.

    Spoiler: show
The scene right before Donte and Vergil fight has the WORST action poses I've ever seen lol

Lol, the thing I hate most about Trish is that she has Sparda. That sword is badass and it doesn't make sense for her to have it. Mayad.

DMC2 is definetely not worse than DmC.
If anything, DmC made me realize that DMC2 was actually decent.

I was referencing Dante's character, which is by far and away the worst in 2, including DmC.

I guess I can see where you're coming from on the gameplay. I simply didn't mind it much at all, the cancelling thing didn't bother me cuz I play ultra conservative (yes, I don't style too much unless there's just one enemy, and yeah, ironic, cuz DMC has always been about style )

Storywise, I thought Dante's character was fine. Possibly because I was getting a bit tired of the way over the top whackyness of previous Dante (video a post or two up describes it pretty well ). I would've preferred him to be a bit more smirky/arrogant, but he was fine. Like everyone else though, I liked Vergil more, shame to wait for his DLC to play as him >.> DMC is like Megaman in reverse: Main guy is red, not blue, and the secondary character is cooler than the primary. :3
