This week's Famitsu has a huge spread on Knights Contract, an all
new Namco Bandai multiplatform action title that has a sexy
heroine and promises lots of blood and violence.

Set in the surroundings of Germany in the 1700s, the game deals
with two historical elements: witch hunts and the legend of Faust.
In the Knights Contract storyline, Faust is an evil alchemist who
lead a series of witch hunts that resulted in the deaths of many.
The person tasked with performing the execution of these witches
was an executioner named Heinrich.

One witch, Gretchen, was scheduled to be executed last amongst a
group of 7. Just before her death, she placed a curse of
immortality on Heinrich. Because of this, Heinrich became suspected
of being a party to the witches, and was chased throughout Europe
for a century's time.

Now in the present, Gretchen has been revived and wants to
defeat Faust. Heinrich agrees to serve as her protector in
exchange for having his mortality eventually returned to him.

In Knights Contract, you take control of Heinrich and face off
against Faust's army of Homunculus creatures. The game features
grotesque creature designs and over-the-top violence, with blood
spraying as you slash away at your foes, seas of blood forming as
you advance through the stages, and flashy quick timer-style
"Execution Attacks" for finishing moves.

Heinrich makes use of swords and weapons that are larger than his
whole body. However, he can also make use of his bare hands to pull
enemies in and toss them away. As you advance in the game, you'll
gain access to "combo actions," where Heinrich pulls in an enemy
with his bare hands, then turns to his weapon for the kill.

The best part about playing as Heinrich is that he's immortal, and
thus can't die, even when attacked by enemies. You die in Knights
Contract when Gretchen, who accompanies Heinrich (or maybe it's
the other way around), incurs damage and loses all her HP.

You'll have to keep Gretchen safe. But she's not just dead weight.
She supports Heinrich with her special witch craft magic. Using
this, Gretchen can do such things as freeze enemies, by, for
example, trapping them in a guillotine that she makes appear on the
battle field. She can also strengthen Heinrich's weapons, even
changing their form.

You only have direct control over Heinrich. Gretchen moves
according to AI routines. However, you can simple issue commands
to her.

TGS trailer made it look pretty decent, then the gameplay video made it look awful. Entire game is an escort (she dies = gameover) with average looking combat. Either the guy playing was retarded or there was no jump button + aerial enemies that he couldn't even hit from the ground. Not expecting much, maybe it'll turn out better than first impressions are giving me though.

Look forward to the 5 difficulty levels! And looks like Gretchen A.I won't be that bad where you have to protect her all the time, which is a good thing.

The point is to have an escort game full time? Thats pretty shitty.

I mean it's great that your character is invincible and all, but when was the last time that was an issue on an escort missions anyway.

Namco Bandai’s Knights Contract is all set for an early 2011 release, the company’s announced today. The medieval game of swordsmen and magic, developed by Game Republic, launches on February 22, 2011.

The game follows the story of Heinrich, an executioner immortalized by the resurrected witch, Gretchen, who he is now forced to work with in order to rid the land of the enemies that now lurk its surface. Just make sure Gretchen doesn’t die, as her “magical prowess and mortality is the key to the duo’s survival.”

Was thinking the same actually. Can't really justify $60 but I'll pick it up when it's cheaper or decide to invest in a Gamefly account.

Looks decent, voice acting in the trailer sounds horrible. I'm hoping to god its different in game. After playing Arc Rise Fantasia on the Wii. I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the VA's.

Been playing this.....rent or gamefly, this game is not worth even 20 dollars
the lip movement and voice over will make you want to cry..... and like someone has already said graphic wise it is mostly comparable to a PS2 game
like the IGN review says, you'll want to kill yourself or grechen within an hour of gameplay
and the Quick time events make it even worse. I don't understand how anyone could sit and watch this game be made....and think its sellable compared to what it must compete with darksiders/dante's inferno/devil may cry/bayonetta/vanquish ... you get the idea....this game cant even shine a candle to devil may cry 1
