Also shiro if you haven't read 1984 or Ender's Game since you were in gradeschool, time to reread, there's so much shit you miss when you don't know what the fuck

Also Starship Troopers, despite what you may think, is less sci fi and more social commentary

Ender's Shadow is also good if you haven't read it since Ender's Game; I personally enjoyed the rest of the Ender quadrilogy as well but most people say it's a mindfsck that isn't even interesting to read. Bean trilogy is dumb, don't read past Shadow. They go more toward usual sci-fi with it as well so maybe not if you're trying to stay away from that for now.

Blarg that book is called Island of the Blue Dolphins I think.

Island of the Blue Dolphins? I could only google the name because I remember abalones were pretty important in the book.

I might go through them again, if I can fit them in. I'm still of the opinion that Animal Farm was Orwell's best work though. There's other stuff that I'd rather do first like read something proper by Murakami as opposed to what the library had available at the time.

Of course, Starship Troopers is less Sci Fi and more social commentary. Who doesn't know that?

Ender's Shadow was a drop in quality, and anything past Speaker for the Dead wasn't worth it.

I think I read all the ender and bean books. Aside from ender's game I probably enjoyed the bean books more than the rest of the ender stuff. Right now I'm reading the Dune books (the reason I read Ender to start with was because I wanted to read 'the classics' that I should have read earlier and it's why I read Dune as well) I doubt I will read everything to do with Dune but I'm going to at least do the full 8 books of the main dune story.

Seconding the Recommendation of American Gods by Neil Gaiman. One of the best books I've ever read, from one of the best contemporary authors around.

I'm on the last one he wrote right now and I know this book ends in a cliff hanger of sorts so I will probably just want to finish it up. Besides, as far as I know literary skill is passed on from father to son so the book will be at least as good.

    1984 was a shitty book.

I read the whole thing like it was candy, I couldnt put it down, but it read like it was constantly on the climactic rise about to get somewhere where there was actually going to be something worth reading but never was.

If you must read Orwell then at least toss in some Huxley. On a different note, The Chocolate War was one of my favorite books when I was a lad.

Avoid Robin Hobb at all costs. Bitch can't write at all.

Add some Frege if you're bored.

If The Chocolate War was one of your favorite books you must've only read one book.

then why would wiki say this

Although it received mixed reviews at the time of its publication, some reviewers have argued it is one of the best young adult novels of all time.

    So extremely well then

1984 was the beginning of a good book. There was no culmination or climax. You cant just leave off an ending to a book.

Because the world at large thinks that any "young adult novel" that is "controversial" is automatically artistic, if it's artistic, then it's good.

Just like the thousands of english teachers who think that book that I had to read about that girl being raped was any good too. Girl gets raped, she dies, and then she looks after people close to her when she's dead. It's boring tripe.
