"Making the internet safe from bullying" is a cute slogan and all, but where's the discussion on how to educate the next generation on how not to be a fucking retard with your public image on the internet? It should be in the standard curriculum for being a productive adult, like touch typing, driving a manual transmission and building a campfire safely.

Oh fuck, nobody knows how to do the above, either. Well, so much for that idea.

yeah, beyond all talk of net neutrality, freedom of speech, the benefits of anonymous communication, internet bullying, etc, there's a basic truth that everyone needs to realize, simply, for their own good: the internet is a public place. a public place with a very long memory. don't be an idiot.

Even if they did figure out a way to regulate the internet, people will just find some other way to torment other anonymously through some other advanced form in the social medium that will be invented in the near future in order to circumvent the regulation on the internet.

Trolls are nothing but a manifestation of inherent human sadism and misanthropy that has been suppressed for centuries due to various laws and censorship. You'd be surprised to see how many "perfect people" in real life are capable of acting like that on the Internet. They're not always those overly skinny/obese, angsty, depressed, ugly as sin people in their early 20's like everyone thinks.

The closest thing to a solution is educating children in school and having them learn a few basics about the Internet and how trolls usually manifest themselves. Once people learn to avoid the "noob" trolls, avoiding the skilled ones is much easier.

Cases like these seem to be getting slowly more frequent, but what about cross country incidents? How does say a Swedish court order Mr. UAE Citizen to stop telling Kelly45 she's an e-hooker. Without the UN itself passing the laws or some other similar organisation isn't it ultimately redundant for some people?

I've always seen the internet like space, there's no way we're going to be able to police it successfully when we cant even communicate with other countries successfully without the use of a plane or a bomb.

I see no point in even attempting to police it. Whatever regulations they try to come up with will just fall flat on its face. If you are stupid enough to commit suicide because some person (or a group of people) on the internet told you to then quite frankly you were just taking up space anyway.
