Do the points this guy is making seem legitimate to you?

His points seem to be that:

1. The fundamental problem is the system we live in, a capitalist one, and not the individual issues, such as companies polluting.

2. That the left has abandoned its contestatory nature towards the economy, and holed itself up in issues such as righ to abortions, gay marriage, etc.

3. That the liberal notion of multiculturalism has failed because (as i interpret it) it has a individualistic notion of integration that does not produce a commity of values.

4. Academia should not let politicians frame the problem, but rather, critically analyse what the elements and context of the problem is before finding a solution.

5. All of this seems to tie into the idea that the resurgence of the right-wing, even more capitalistic, anti-immigrant, hyper-nationalism is the fault of liberalism for not addressing fundamental questions, abandoning economic justice, and lack of pushing for fundamental social values.

What do you think? He is a blowhard? He has legitimate points? Which ones and why?

I didn't read the rest of the thread but:

1. Capitalism breeds things like companies polluting in an attempt to increase their profits. With more government regulation (or with an absense of capitalism) this is less likely to happen, since there will be less impetus to pollute.

2. Social issues hit home for average citizens much better than ones dealing with the economy. If the left focuses on social issues, they'll probably be more likely to rally the voter base than if they droned on and on about the economy. I know that sort of talk usually turns me off, where social issues are of great interest to me.

Probably true, but it mostly goes back to the notion the right-wing is pushing that "liberal" is a dirty word and equal to Socialism, and so the few liberals that remain (or admit that they are liberal) are focusing on social issues to motivate voters rather than economic ones. The economy is mostly out of control of Congress to solve, so all the Democrats really have on that issue is to blame the Bush policies for putting us into our current economic state. Basically, American liberals need to quit being pussies.
