PS3 Backwards compatibility

I friend of mine is purchasing a ps3 for his son but is not very tech savvy. While I should know the answer or could research it I told him I would post and ask for recommendations. His son wants one that will be able to play ps2 games. While I saw a list of backwards compatible games for the ps3 I wasn't sure which versions could play them. Any recommendations on the current versions? Thanks

Ps3 hasn't been backwards compatible for a few years now, his only luck is to buy a used one of the first couple generations (usually at a higher premium).

I was afraid that would be the answer. If he purchases an older generation how reliable do you think would it be?

Really depends on how well the owner took care of it...it's risky. I bought mine off CL (fat 40GB) from a 20-something computer savvy guy, so seeing pics and what not, it looks good and have had no problems with it. Owned it for around a year now, not sure when he bought it.

If he's really cautious though, just buy a new PS3, and grab a PS2 slim. Cost might be around the same unless you get a deal.
