Yeah it's members logged at a specific time, they look pretty accurate from what I've seen, but that doesn't represent the total number of persons playing at all.
Until they (IE: never) release an updated report on current paid subscriptions, which they feasibly couldn't do until the free month passes anyway (otherwise they'd be inflated by people like myself, who are still feasting on the free month, yet aren't actually playing), we won't know how many subs they have.
Still, we can glean enough information from that graph to know that things aren't looking good. Interest is down, but it should spike back up after the first of the big updates in November.
No, simply searching lodestone will give all characters regardless of whether they are online or not - which does make it a surprisingly low number though, yes.
Just searching by "server" and "skill" I can find friends' characters that haven't been logged on for 3 weeks.
On a related note..
I seem to remember an interview back in august where they talked about predictions for XIV and they mentioned XI had needed 200k subscriptions to break even..?
I don't know if anybody else remembers that, but I would assume XIV has cost more to develop than XI did so the current numbers are 'interesting' to say the least.
Edit:
vgchartz is reporting 369,966 sales though not including Japan.
Came back from roughly a week away from the game, wondered how many people were online... 593 on Kashuan during EU prime. Ouch. Was just under 1k when I was looking prior to my break. Is this trend happening on other servers, or did I just come back at a quiet time?
When I decided to up and quit last week there were roughly 800-900 people on Figaro during NA prime the 3-4 days I would randomly check. It was around 1,300~ during the weekends for JP prime time. Take that as you will considering Figaro seems to be the second most populated.
680 players on Saronia right now, there were about 900ish at around this time a week ago.
801 on Wutai right now, towards the end of EU primetime (10:25 GMT).
Recently Kashuan has been under 700 during CST/EST prime time and ~1,100 during JP primetime... pretty terrible actually, and getting very hard to find groups since a lot of friends quit![]()
Wonder if theirs any NA people doing a similar chart hmmm

I assume it's the average number during jp peak time?
yes , thats why I was wondering if theirs a NA version with NA 'peak hours"![]()
905 people on the Wutai server at 8:45pst pm.
Take one off the Saronia counter, I dropped this failed abortion like a rock just now.
there's been ~1400 on Figaro during NA prime time since last week's announcements. That's a big step up from the 900 we were getting at the same time prior to that.
