Restoration of Game Services (Mar. 22)

As part of power conservation measures enacted following the Tohoku earthquake, our game servers were shut down on Mar. 13, 2011 3:00 (PDT) and services for FINAL FANTASY XIV, FINAL FANTASY XI, and PlayOnline (hereafter referred to as "these services") were temporarily suspended. We have determined a date for the restoration of these services, and would like to share this information with you.

Operating the servers for these services makes up 11.6% of the total power consumed by our Tokyo office (based on February 2011 records). We have shut down our air conditioning system (8.8%) and enacted other power conservation measures, such as reducing lighting in our offices, to achieve over 10% in energy usage reductions. With these energy saving measures in place, we will be able to bring our servers back online and restore service to FINAL FANTASY XIV, FINAL FANTASY XI, and PlayOnline on Mar. 25, 2011 4:00 (PDT). All other services, such as those offered on the PlayOnline website, that were temporarily suspended will also be restored at the same time. Please be aware, however, that we may once again be required to suspend services in the event that the power situation worsens.

We offer our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused by the temporary suspension of these services, and thank you for your understanding. As noted in our original notice regarding the suspension of these services, customers will not be charged any monthly fees for FINAL FANTASY XI throughout the April billing cycle.

We at the Square Enix group are trying to act in a proactive manner in order to provide support towards the relief and restoration efforts in the face of this unprecedented disaster while providing reliable service to our customers, and we thank you for your understanding and support.

As SNK and others pointed out, the systems they have running FFXI are likely a tad more complicated than the PC you got for Christmas. I actually imagine they had to be pretty creative to cut the AC for certain, non-essential parts of the building while still maintaining enough cooling to keep the hardware safe. Then again, they probably just have a switch for that, right?

Also- estimates on the number of people who went a week (or however long it was) without FFXI, saw that life didn't end, and decided to quit? I'm going with 0.

Serious data centers are always climate-controlled. With the servers offline, they were probably able to turn off their data center AC units for the last week.

Well, with just my TV, laptop and PS3 or Xbox, I can heat my apartment up ~10 degrees warmer than it is outside. I'm sure if you are running an MMO, the heat coming off the servers is going to be substantial enough that you'll run the air fairly cool on that floor, or maybe the whole building? I don't know, but that would be my best guess. :|

I mean maybe it's because I'm in a different place in life or finances, but I had so many games accumulated from a combination of grad school / a demanding job without time to play, and other things to do that boredom wasn't an issue at all. Even if people on BG don't have the same work situation, I'm sure that, bluntly spoken, people bootleg enough here to have that supply.

1) Get the building (server room) back under climate control
2) Spend a day or two cleaning out the equipment of dust and grim

We have been without service for awhile now so whats another day to get the systems in a clean working order. Though they did just move the servers so they might have already done the cleaning part.

I did play Uncharted 2 and I enjoyed it tremendously. And I'm slowly but steadily working through the DS remake of FFIV. But I didn't plow through stuff like I hoped I would.

I used to think that a shortage of time was my excuse for not tackling my backlog. But I'm starting to realize that the actual issue is I don't have the patience to learn new interfaces and mechanics. Look at what I reverted to when I had free time- two games I already knew how to play.

If you have a PSP and you're not all the way through FFIV DS, I'd advise waiting: They're releasing a PSP compilation soon that has that as well as "the After Years", which was originally released on cell phones in Japan / Virtual Console here.

Ok, so I was able to actually do the playonline update just now, but when I go to "check files" final fantasy XI isn't there. Now is this because this is the first time I've actually loaded and updated playonline? Or is there another issue. I'd like to be able to start the update at 7am so I can play when I get up.

firstly, be sure you've updated the game. I'm not sure what kind of install you've gotten up to, but afterwards, you definitely want to go here:

Post #2 has mega upload links that still work as of yesterday. (i'm also doing this on new machine ^^).
So apply these big patches
then be ready to login to POL for any additional updates. (right now its down since servers are).

How is that not having a life, I'm not starting a fight or anything but he said its his day off and hes setting an alarm (I could understand staying awake all night skipping class, work, ect. might confirm your statement), but if he want's to wake up to play a video game on his day off I don't see how that constitutes him not having a life. Well maybe "having no life" is the wrong choice of words. I'm not saying I was never at that point, we've all been there. Ain't no way in hell I'd be setting my alarm at 7am on my day off to play a video game the moment it comes back online. If it were any other day off, I doubt it'd be the same.

Yea, I have the "Ultimate Collection" i think its from 2008. POL doesn't crash when I start it or anything, so I'm assuming thats good news? But Playonline actually updated when it checked POL version, which it wasn't doing up until about an hour ago.

I just forced a file check for FFXI and didn't end up downloading anything. It all went through fine though. Same story for POL.

When I'm trying to Unzip the files it says "the same volume can not be used as both the source and destination"

sucks you can't log on to pol, I need to do some updating but since it's a steam install (new since servers went down) it can't even tell that I have ffxi installed for me to force a file check ; ;

I was able to get pol updated a bit ago, though, which I haven't been able to for about a week til now.

You can't file check FFXI from POL until you've gone through a file check during XI startup and fired XI up the normal way.
