Readme:

This is a time line of the history of Vana'diel. Many of the people, places and events within are not given an official English translation. If you recognize any incorrect spellings for people, place names, events, or the like, please post and let me know. I tried to track down as many as I could, but there still may be many more references I missed. The ones with no official spelling to be found I estimated as best I could, but I guarantee they are all wrong. 8)

**Any guesswork is written in italics!**

Now where are some of these references hidden?

For example, a Taru recently added to the game to promote Wings of the Goddess mentions Fort Karugo-Narugo. An Ordelle Bronzepiece reveals the spelling of Fainevlure Ordelle. Stuff like that.

The Victory of Bastok Valley
In March of the year 487, the construction of fortifications for the free laborers in the valleys of Bastok was interrupted by a raid from a faction of Sand’Oria’s Royal Knights. (Sand’Oria had labeled Mayer and his troupe as thieves.) To combat this, the miners devised a plan wherein they would skirmish briefly with the knights while gradually retreating, leading them into the depths of the canyons. When they finally had the knights under the great waterfall, they lured them into a thin passageway and blocked them inside it. All at once, crossbowmen from the cliffs above rained down bolts upon the hapless unit. Half of the knights were killed and over a hundred more were taken prisoner. Among the Bastokan forces, only 47 people were injured or killed, making this a decisive victory for Bastok in the pages of history.

The Royal Knights of the Elvaan had been something to be feared until now, but with this victory, the scattered free laborers rallied under Ironman Mayer, and his reputation was boosted immensely. These events directly influenced the founding of the Republic of Bastok.

The Founding of The Republic of Bastok
Hume and Galka miners alike gathered in Bastok’s plaza, and looked up on the hill to see three flags had been raised, representing “Freedom,” “Victory,” and “Unity.” There was great jubilation amongst the people as the already legendary Ironman Mayer began to ascend to the top of the hill. There he suddenly cast aside the three flags and made his proclamation to the people.

And thus, he founded the Republic of Bastok, saying, “Free laborers! If ya want freedom, who needs a nation? If ya want victory, juss hightail it ta safety. Ya’ll talk ‘bout unity, but are still a ragtag buncha workers. Don’cha see? If we’re ta succeed, if we’re ta beat our enemies, if we’re ta do the impossible; shouldn’t we make ourselves a great nation on this very land!?”

With great fervor, everyone cried out together, and their cheers shook the very canyons of Bastok. However, the people were soon quieted by Dalha, a Galka Warrior and close friend of Mayer’s. Through the silence he bellowed, “Mayer for President!” and instantly everyone in the crowd erupted in a thunderous approving applause. http://www.cactusleaftl.com/ffxipics/PIH/timelines/bastok03.jpg
The Bastokan Blight
The Bastokan Blight began when a simple traveler from a foreign country came to stay at an inn on Gold Street. While he was eating in the dining hall, without warning, his face fell into his pebble soup and he died on the spot. Upon closer inspection, it was revealed the traveler had strange blotches all over his body, but at the time he was simply buried without much concern. However, only a week later, the entire staff of that inn was found dead with the same symptoms as the traveler. With that began the Bastokan Blight, a terrible plague with an incredibly high mortality rate.

The Bastokan government employed the aid of White Mages from overseas (the capital had almost none) and had priests handing out medicines and holy water. Still, the damage had been done, and the plague could not be stopped. The town streets were overflowing with corpses of the dead, and the few Galkan undertakers worked madly to keep up with funeral services. Many people confronted the priests and monks, demanding some kind of reason for this devastation. The capital was ruled by panic and despair.

In addition, the plague appeared to only affect Hume, which sparked wild theories amongst the populace. Was this the result of an evil incantation from a Galkan wizard? A new biological weapon of the Goblins? Did the Quadav sent poison down through the mines? Rumors and accusations flew wildly about.

http://www.cactusleaftl.com/ffxipics/PIH/timelines/bastok04.jpg
The Elshimo Naval Battle
In the waters near Elshimo Island, a battle erupted between the united naval forces of Bastok and Tavanasia, and the Windurst navy.

In the world of maritime trading, Windurst was becoming an annoying obstacle, as they were monopolizing trade with Southern and Eastern nations, much to the dismay of Tavnazia and Bastok.

In order to avoid the many storms upon the dangerous Southern Seas, the Pamtam Straits were the only recourse. However, taking that route would have one’s ship beset with Mithran pirates. On top of that, Windurst would not allow anyone to take refuge in their ports. Even if a country was to send out a trade ship despite these dangers, they would incur a serious risk of damage and loss of goods.

Working with Tavnazia, Bastok sent 84 ships, and joined the Maquisate’s 37 ships in a grand naval alliance set on subjugating the Mithran pirates in their home base on Elshimo Island.

Following a grand ceremony, the combined naval forces set off for Elshimo Island. They planned to arrive on Elshimo and destroy the pirates’ headquarters, but were intercepted by magically propelled battleships from Windurst, which promptly fired upon them.

The Tavnazian admiral was livid, seeing that Windurst had been behind the nefarious actions of the Mirthan pirates all along.

Naturally, Windurst had brought its own fleet and 62 ships to defend themselves, and their forces clashed against the allied navy off the Western shores of Elshimo.

At first, the superiority of the Windurst fleet, along their skill in magic, had the allied navy loses ships left and right. However, there was something for which they failed to take into account. In an effort to overwhelm their enemy with numbers, the TaruTaru sent many of their magically-powered battleships to pick up Mithra from their homeland. Due to this, the navy as a whole was thrown into chaos, with no clear direction governing the fleet of ships. As the currents changed, the Windurst navy was split every which way, and the heavily equipped artillery of the Bastokan navy quickly helped to gain the upper hand. The cunning Mithra were able to gain their own victories here and there, but in the end, the allied navy clearly won the war, and reduced the enemy ships to scraps amongst the seaweed.

As a result of this naval battle, Windurst lost control over the Bastore Sea, and their stranglehold on trade with the South.

As for Tavnazia, they were able to significantly develop their status as a nation through trade in the southern region.

If you look at this naval battle from Windurst’s point of view, it was a horrific act of aggression from Bastok (and Tavnazia) for the sake of profit. Looking from Bastok’s point of view though, it was the just subjugation of a conspiracy between Windurst and pirates.

The truth behind this war may always be obscured in the pages of history, and to this day, people in each country still hold conflicting opinions over the story of this battle.

The Construction of Heaven’s Bridge
In February of the year 835, Bastok decided to undertake a large-scale project to connect the various shores off the Straits of Jeuno via stone bridges. The project was to be similar to Kulatz Bridge in Bastok Markets, and many Galkan masons were hired for the construction. The plans were meticulous, and dictated that the bridges be made from scratch, rather than built upon the existing remains of old bridges. Previously, Windurst’s Manustery had made a wooden bridge (connecting to Mindartia only) but strong winds had since caused it to collapse.

The project was dubbed “Heaven’s Gate,” and after its completion and the subsequent appearance of the Archduke, Jeuno continued to adapt and change, and became the bustling metropolis we know today within only half a century’s time.

There were two reasons for Bastok to go to such lengths with this project. First, since large-scale constructions on Bastok had been completed, many Galkan masons were out of work. Thus, this could help solve the current unemployment problem. Second, as a result of the Elshimo Naval Battle, Bastok had earned itself a new rival: merchants from Tavnazia. By building a land route to facilitate trade with other nations, Bastok would have a line of trade fully under their control.

However, as a result of the Archduke’s appearance in Jeuno, the territory was made an independent nation, and proceeded to employ many of Bastok’s engineers and laborers, offering them a better life in a splendid new country. Due to this, the anticipated benefits of Bastok’s project were soon nullified.

http://www.cactusleaftl.com/ffxipics/PIH/timelines/bastok05.jpg
The Assassination of Berner
On chilly October evening, while Prien was returning from his conference, the Head of Military Affairs, Berner, was killed by someone in the Metalworks.

Evidence had shown that he was stabbed in the chest countless times with a sharp object, so initially it was thought the murderer had some kind of grudge against him. However, a government official from Sand’Oria revealed that someone already matched this criminal profile: A Tonberry. According to the official, it is believed that the Shadow Lord had dispatched Tonberries before the outbreak of the war to assassinate those political figureheads who were advocating aggression towards him. The wounds observed in the victims from Sand’Oria matched the ones in this case precisely.

The strange story the official gave was, unfortunately, soon to be proven accurate, as a wave of assassinations hit Bastok, culminating in the attempted murder of President Prien himself.

Remnants of Al'Taieu? It sounds like there were more bridges than just the remains of Windurst's Bridge.

One more thing, Is Jeuno on an island, or is it just sitting in the middle of the ocean?

Guess this would be the fort then? Wondered what it was.

That event happened over 400 years before the age adventurer and crystal war era, WotG focus on the crystal war.

I'd imagine that's a picture of a pre-ToAU Zazarg and his musketeer unit. Though he's not wearing Koenig Body like he did on the Flashback CS in the "Fist of the People"

The construction was 420+ years ago, yes, but Gwyn's just guessing it's the same fort.

Regarding the change of armo(u)r, didn't we conclude that Zazarg's flashback was not too long before Windy opened Mhaura's port to Aht Urhgan? I forgot how long, though. I don't remember if they mention it in the quest.

but I'd imagine a part of their force made it to Quon with the aid of other beastmenYeah, according to the Antican section, Triarius V-VIII participated in the war.

Yeah I'm curious as to what that building actually is, why it's not there anymore, and where "bastok valley" is referring to.

Zazarg left Bastok at the end of crystal war due to him not wanting to get with the whole political crap after the war was over, and basically left the shady politician above him with some potential scandal-bait with him leaving with no reason.

And IIRC, he used the tenshodo's warp-you-to-leypoint option, hence the reason you met him in leypoint on the quest, as that place is a reminder of his entry to the Near East.

Later on though, the musketeers under his command stowed away in a ship, possibly from mhaura, but Zazarg has been part of the mercenary force for a good while by then.

Bastok Valley seems to be the valley where Bastok was built at. Bastok has mountains surronding every side of it, except the part that's facing the sea.

And I don't think Zazarg left instantly after the war, but I'm unsure. I need to watch the cutscene again I guess.

the valley theyre talking about might be drachenfall? if thats the right name. place with thf af gob fight, CN map quest stone. the only problem with that is theyd have to go thru dangruf wardi to get there.
tho who knows how much the exact layout of gustaburg has changed since then.

There's not really any ambiguity about where Bastok Valley is. Fort Bastok was in the valley; the fort became Metalworks; Bastok surrounds Metalworks; Bastok Valley is the area in which Bastok sits.

anyway.. you wrote this..

ah ok..

lol hes not mentioned at all here tho? Usually they like to tie up references from the book to the game.. like Ranperre for Dragon Chronicles.. and Miratete (tho i've not seen the Windurst timeline thing yet)?..

then again they were all political leaders, this guy is just a general.

True. But unlike other zones that have those machines in it, in Dangruf Wadi these hallways are directly connected to the room with the Strange Apparatus.

None of the hallways are directly connected to the Strange Apparatus room. You can drop down from that hall into one below, but the only way to get in is through the illusion wall.

Only because the programmers made it that way. But that doesen't change the fact that architecturally all of these hallways are of the same origin and one of them leads directly to the machine. And unlike us adventurers, the archeologist could have used a ladder or a rope to get up the ledge and discover those hallways and the machine. Only because players have to go through the illusion wall, it doesen't mean a character from Vana'Diel history has to. I think it's safe to assume that it refers to the discovery of the hallways. The question is: Has he found the machine aswell? The reference to an "ancient society" makes me think he had.

Approximately 3000 B.C.E – Earliest evidence of a Hume village in Dangruf Wadi. (Estimated through various documents and artifacts)4000 years ago (approx.) seems "ancient".

I think the meltdown was around 9,000-10,000 years ago. While very old, it is post-Zilart.

Hume village estimated through documents and artifacts doesen't sound like giant hallways and an ancient machine to me. But anyway, remnants of a 4000 year old hume village makes me wonder where humes originally came from. iirc TaruTaru are originally from Quon, Elvaan somewhere from the North, Galka and Mithra from islands in the south, but Humes? Given the fact that Aht Urghan and more so the Alzadaal civilization is technologically far more advanced then the Quon civilizations at that time, makes me think that Humes from eastern nations started to go west some thousand years ago and continued to do so. Even the first president of Bastok came from Aradijah by ship before he started working as a miner in Quon during the first gold rush.

No there is only one. But assuming the Zilart didn't build these machines for matter emulation in the middle of nowhere, there must have been some structures around them at some time in the past. And since the hallways in Dangruf Wadi are connected to the room with the machine, i assumed that those could be part of the original structures.
The other possibility would be that Humes found the machine 4000 years ago and built their village around it. But as i said, giant hallways don't really look "village-style" to me.

Yes, Galka are from Kuzotz, a group of islands south off Quon. And unlike all other races, it is never really mentioned where Humes originally came from.

- Rumors of the birth of a new Quadav king spread through Bastok. What exactly does this mean? The next in line for kingship...ness? If so, is it possible that this is the Diamond Quadav? I made up stories behind the Ocean Sahagin (I made up that this is the former matriarch/patriarch of the Mahnpa Tribe or whatever the higher tier one is) and Tonberry Pontifex, and the other beastmen of the same tier are explained, except for this.

I have a question... the Kuluu were changed into Tonberries by the meltdown, but was it explicitly stated that the Zilart were changed into the present 5 races? I think I remember one of the NPC zilart or kuluu villains (Nag'Molada?) saying something about 'devolved creatures' in reference to the 5 races, or something like that....

If this is true, then was it stated anywhere how this happened, or where all these 'new' races started off or went to after the Meltdown?

In the cutscene right before you enter Tu'Lia or something, whatsherface (Yve'noile?) mentions that the Meltdown "divided" the Zilart into the "five races".

They never explicitly say what made the races divide. The most likely things are the five mothercrystals (which aren't elemental-based, although the cutscene I mentioned does say that they gathered energy from all 5 crystals, and then divided that elementally, presumably making the protocrystals) or the Emptiness/darkness/evilness/sins/badness/Promathia/vices (apathy, arrogance, cowardice, envy, and rage).

I was just looking at some screens from that cutscene (I SS'd most of that cutscene because it was actually interesting, unlike most other ZMs), and I'll let someone else decide if it helps out at all:

"Mortals are an incomplete species. When Eald'narche's quest for Paradise was thwarted, life on this planet lost its perfection.
Particularly, thine inability to communicate with others of thy race casts a shadow over thy development.
This inability became increasingly evident after the Meltdown divided thee into the five races.
The arrogance of the Elvaan, the envy of the Mithra, the cowardice of the Tarutaru, the apathy of the Humes, and the rage of the Galka... These are the traits thou must carry as thou makes thy jounrey through life."

One thing worth noting is that the Ark Angels existed before the Meltdown, so this would mean the image of them already existed. I forgot whether they [AAs] are beings of light or darkness, though.
