Nate's Data Mine

Introduction

Hello everyone,
It was not until recently that I learned that different regions produce different items while gathering. I believe it will be quite useful to get a better idea of what regions produce which materials. To accomplish I have created a new character and will solely gather on him and track the progress and materials gathered. I will being doing this project in one hour intervals. It is my hope that I will hit level ten by hour two. I want to spend two hours on each on each grade of mining point to try to get a appropriate sample size of what is gathered at those locations. With this information I hope to see which materials overlap between mining grades and which materials are exclusive to particular regions. I will start in Ul'dah and then go to Limsa Lominsa and then Gridania. Information that I will be keeping track off: number nodes mined, number a failed gather attempts, resources lost due to failed attempts, resources gained, crystals gained, level up time, node at which level occurred.

UPDATE
So I was sitting aroudn thinking about how I could of done things differently so that the project would go along smoother. I have changed several things. First of all I have arranged everything in a spreadsheet and then I save that as a pdf so I can get white space instead of grid lines. Then I take screen caps of the pages and save them as 800x800 images. I hope y'all like the new format change. When I first started this project it was all about finding out where you get specific materials from mining. The more I did the project the more I was interested in finding out the percentages from particular nodes. That is what I a more interested in. However, the way this project started is not the best way to collect such info. A better way would be to pick a adequate sample size and then compare the data. So that is now what I am going to do. From now on, beyond hour 5, I will be collecting data on 75 successful gathers.75 happens to be the amount I should be able to pull off in an hour. In fact, it will be my minimum sample size. I am getting worn out so I may just do one sample size for each node in each region. And then Ill go back and maybe do some more. So, over time my sample size will get larger and larger and we can compare what the average was for a particular run to the overall average and see where the numbers trend.

I noticed on Botanist I've started getting 4 max (instead of 3) of lower tier branches at once, Maple and arrowwood. Seemed at around level 15. Shards is still 3 per success max.

What Rank? Also, did you have any traits active? Namely ones that give you better odds of multiple yields?

I'm Rank-18 Fisher and I haven't ever received more than 3 of anything from any Grade waters... even after grinding away at Grade-1 for hours last night.

I am just now learning about abilities that increase skill ups and odds. I suppose for my project I will not use any abilities. Two new items showed up for me on grade one. Bloodworms and lightning rocks. I am really excited for the next hour. Comparing grade 1 to grade 2

Wow! Look at the difference between crystals I got! I pumped everything into lightning and look what happens :) I wonder if this works for other things like what crystals mobs drop

No, it only appears to affect gathering. Monsters have their own elemental affinities that affect their aetheryte drops.

I was not that excited about gathering at first. I was thinking to myself that is sucked that it would appear the shards I got were pretty random. But now it would seem you could almost completely choose which shards you get. I am assuming im getting fire because that element is most associated with mining? Would wind be for botany and water for fishing?

So far here are the items that it would appear you can not get from grade 1 but you can get from grade 2
Limonite
Potter's Clay
Pyrite
Raw Sphene
Soiled Femur
Zinc Ore

You should put your stats up there as well. I think STR or VIT and MND effects mining. And elemental affinity to a certain element gives you a higher chance of digging up the element shards.

The first two hours I did with base stats. The third hour I pumped lightning. The fourth hour I pumped water. Ill try with stats distributed between STR/VIT/MND for the next 4 hours. I am currently working on a spreadsheet.

So there is a csv of my current spread sheet. So far the only real useful information from it is that I would get a whole 27k if I sold 4 hours worth of mining to a npc :(

Add Silver Ore and Mythril Ore as well.

I believe the bar you set when you start gathering, the one named "exposed ore" affects the chance of getting certain items as well. For instance having the bar set at the highest point (most exposed) could yield a larger amount of rock salt than if you put the bar at the lowest end. I have no proof of whether this idea is right or not, but your method could reveal any differences.

The bar certainly does affect items, not to say you won't get rock salt the lower you go (cause you do, and I have) but maybe you're more likely to get ores.

Maybe the bar decides how hard it is to get items, like when you suddenly fail after 2 hits.

What has me worried about Ul'Dah mining is that it seems like you do not get very many useful items for crafting. Without the fire crystals you are just completely boned. I should of LL stats up today. Also, my method has been to keep the notch in the middle. After I complete the basic mission behind the project I may go back and explore other things like notch location.

*EDIT*
What does everyone think of the new format?
