Router Suggestions?

My router just shit the bed, so I gotta go out and buy a new one like... right now.

Currently hooked to the internet by ethernet cable straight to the modem.

God, I hate roughing it.

Someone once told me "most routers are pieces of shit" and "use crappy parts that breakdown".

Current (broken one) is a Linksys 2.4 GHz / Wireless-G 54mbps... my PC would get like 2 of 5 bars while being maybe 20 feet away... and recently I'd disconnect from FFXI and shit constantly, and have trouble getting on POL... so I guess those were the warning signs it was dying. Had it for about 3 years.

Any suggestions on a new one that doesn't suck?

You would probably get better results in the Tech section, random question tread has probably covered this.
But any cheap Linksys should do all you need it too. Or you can look into flashing that one with dd-wrt, that could bring some life back too it.

I used to have the same router, hated it. Replaced it with an E1000, hate it too. My next router will definitely not be Linksys.

I had a linksys that worked from 2003 up to this past summer. I recently got a Linksys e1200 or whatever its called. It works alright for me, got a little weird when I would run hard lined PS2/FFXI and laptop wireless internet. Cycling power would fix it if it acted up. Also, sometimes for some reason it doesn't get the IP information out correctly or something to my laptop/ps3/whatever. Restarting computer/etc almost always fixes.

If you don't need anything for like.. really high bandwidth gaming(?) fuck I dunno. Don't spend more than 50/60 bucks, basically.

Using a Linksys E1200 right now, works beautifully to all my game systems and computers anywhere in the apartment, no problems. Cisco is the best company hands-down for networking, they have been doing it a long time, anyone having probs with theirs...dunno what to say about that actually. Got it for 49.99, there's probably a higher-end one by now for about the same price, but maybe not. Definitely make sure you get wireless G instead of B of course. Buffalo routers are generally okay too, but you're always going to get the best results with a wired connection vs a wireless one and many people prefer to have a wired router.

You should post the exact model of your router so we can tell you if its flashable with DD-WRT and give you instructions on how to.

Worst case scenario you brick it and end up getting a new one like you planned.

DD-WRT is awesome and might fix all your problems.
