Viewing jp under notepad/wordpad

My server sucks now and is filled with nothing but JP and i'm trying to view JP under notepad using the logger plugin for windower.

Only problem is whenever I open the notepad for logger it comes out like this from jp text:

but when I paste jp text from a site into notepad it recognizes it fine and doesn't crash or anything 昨日なんと珍.

tbh what do I do? I'm only trying to translate jp text, however I can paste text into ffxi but I can never understand what the jp guy is actually saying to me because I have no way of copying its jp text.

You need to change the encoding of notepad to default to Unicode/UTF-8. Which may or may not be possible (you can change the default save encoding, but I have no idea if that changes the encoding of files created by programs).

Another fix would be to change language for non-unicode programs to JP, this will mean you can read the JP in logger but may cause issues with some other programs. Mainly due to symbol for \ in file paths changes (only affects lines typed in cmd iirc, programs will still be able to find folders like normal).

Also, I'm not sure how logger works, but if it uses one main .txt you could open it and save as Unicode/UTF-8, this won't change any text already in there but it should mean that any more JP text written to the file will be viewable.

1. Right click -> New -> Text Document
2. Open "New Text Document.txt". Do NOT type anything!
3. Go to "File -> Save As... " and choose UTF-8 under "Encoding:", press "Save" and overwrite existing file. Close the file.
4. Rename "New Text Document.txt" to "TXTUTF-8.txt"
5. Copy "TXTUTF-8.txt" to "C:\WINDOWS\SHELLNEW"
6. Go to "Start -> Run..." and type

Press OK.
7. Navigate to
-------------------------------------------
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt\ShellNew
-------------------------------------------
8. Right click in the right window -> New -> "String Value" and rename it to
-----------
FileName
-----------
9. Double click on "FileName" and put

TXTUTF-8.txt
----------------
into "Value data:" field and press OK.
10. It's finished.
11. Test it: Create new .txt document (Right click -> New -> Text Document). Open it and go to "File -> Save As... " and see that encoding is set by default to UTF-8 .

NOTE: These steps are ONLY for creating new and blank UTF-8 .txt documents. If .txt is already saved with ANSI encoding, it will stay ANSI when saving it next time - so if UTF-8 is needed (in this case), it must be set manually.

P.S. Also change "fSavePageSettings" & "fSaveWindowPositions" DWORD values to "1" within following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Notepad

That's how to change the default save encoding. Everything else I found has said it's impossible to change the default encoding that notepad uses when opening files, however I've found very few recent posts about it.

well I followed the directions and saved it as UTF-8 but now it's converting the jp text from ffxi into a different kind of gibberish from what I originally had.

i tried pasting this in my ffxi and copied out into the notepad using logger:

昨日なんと珍

converts to:

Ȃƒa@ɍs

so this problem still remains.

edit: I saved the file logger was writing its info to UTF-8, opened it later and it still opens as UTF-8 and more text is still being written in as I open it each time, so that work, but the JP text still isn't being recognized. I'm still able to actually paste jp text into the file myself, but it won't record the text from ffxi correctly. I'm doing this on notepad btw.

I done a quick test and UTF-8 does display JP characters, my guess is that method doesn't work with system/program created .txt and only when you open notepad and save.

Would have to use JP non-unicode thing or try formating each .txt logger creates to UTF-8/Unicode (open them, save as... and overwite existing file) and it *should* be able to save JP added to it after the change.

EDIT:: Just noticed your edit, is it possibly and problem with logger then? (are you able to paste in JP, save, then open and view JP you pasted, just not any pasted into ffxi and saved by logger?)

yeah, i'm actually able to do that. weird. just jp pasted into ffxi is converted into gibberish.

Might be an issue with using IME then, or logger itself. Probably better off asking on windower forum by the sounds of it. Could also try changing system locale even if just temp to test it.

If the plugin does not record the text in UTF-8 (and I am rather sure it does not), there is absolutely nothing you can do besides requesting a plug-in update or programming a new one yourself.

The best place to ask about this particular would be the Windower forums.

At the moment, I don't know if there are any other options. On the Windower forums, however, you should be able to get a response.

Also, if you're finding dead links, chances are you're looking at the old Windower plug-in site. The newer one is here:
