Sensory Integration, Noise and Your Baby in the NICU.

So I want to hear BG's opinion. I live in the south and some people in this region believe that its not possible and the stimuli are related to other "reactions".

I've been reading a lot lately into research in the past conducted primarily since it is so closely related to what is below.

Shit murders me and everyone I know personally. For the majority of humans I would hope. I've heard some friends say also that its just annoying and not soothing.

What exactly is this thread about?

edit: listened to um 7 minutes of the um video. I didn't um find it um annoying um, except for maybe um how she um can't talk, that um, was a little annoying, but um it wasn't a big deal. Though um, it wasn't very soothing either.

This is not the first time I've heard about this topic (if I've even understood it correctly.) The literature I've read before suggested that babies can hear in the womb, and that their brain development can benefit from being stimulated this way. What I took from it was that variety was really the only established metric in terms of helpfulness (babies will become bored after some amount of time after being exposed to any novel stimuli), although there are studies on animals for related topics that suggest quality can certainly have an effect on the outcome too (rats solving problems faster when listening to classical music vs heavy metal, etc.) You won't find any correlation studies on what types of sounds might be better for this explicit application. Your own judgment is probably the best tool that you have in regards to that, and the pursuit of additional credible information.

Also, timing is critical when it comes to these things. Researchers have identified different periods of child development in which it is most helpful to expose children to different kinds of stimuli (i.e., visual stimulation right out of the womb isn't very helpful because of how underdeveloped the eyes are, but smell is somewhat well developed and can be more helpful during that time.) I'm not an expert, but it's something that I did remember and that seemed important. You should research it more.

I think the thread is a little crazier than that, Mojo. Video is pretty full-out crazy.

Humans start hearing towards the beginning/middle of the third trimester (when she looks about ready to pop) and there's no evidence that their acoustic environment at that point influences their development. Any noise from the outside has to travel through several phase boundaries (gas to solid to liquid to solid to liquid to baby) before it hits the cochlea, which probably isn't fully formed or connected yet. Only loud noises are going to make it through and they'll be filtered and attenuated so that (even if the baby was hearing in air, which they aren't) they will not be what they sounded like to us outside the body. Imagine how well you hear things under water. This is even worse.

Whispering like in the video is exceptionally silly because it doesn't use your vocal cords normally and contains more high-pitch tones (which would be strongly filtered by solids within the mother's body). If the baby seems calmer when the mother is whispering, perhaps it's because it can't hear her rather than because it can.

I still have no fucking idea what this thread is about, but in regards to babies and noise during pregnancy, from the materials I read during my own pregnancy the only thing I saw was in relation to music. Tons of women play mozart on their bellies because it was believed it would make them smarter.

Studies suggest otherwise, that the music could actually hurt their hearing development and is somewhat irrelevant because, as byrth said, they wouldn't actually be hearing the music as it's played. After birth I guess is another thing.

Yet, it's not like tons of deaf babies are being born because of music being played on tummies so....w/e.

I will say the idea of keeping everything calm and quiet when it's time for bed does seem to create a better environment where it's easier to get the baby to sleep. I tend to naturally whisper in her ear when rocking her without thinking. But I mean, is that some big revelation or something? Not really sure how this relates to the thread at all, but ya, babies get scared of loud noises as well so you know, it's good to keep things at a lower volume.

It's physiologically impossible for a baby to hear whispers while inside the womb. Their ears haven't developed the attenuation required to even hear at that frequency range.

Step back from somebody about 30 feet. In air, the whisper *may* make it through. Now put a barrier, fully-enclosed, in about 3-4 layers and a bag of saline between you and whisper softly.

    Doesn't work, does it?

I have no idea what the fuck you're going on about - I get the NICU shit (they're actually, well at least the one my daughter was on was, pretty bloody noisy places with the endless beeping alarms going off - they do lots to reduce overstimulation in terms of covering incubators to give babies some quiet time visually - but noisewise - nowhere near as much)... but the freaky woman on the video that won't load properly on my PC - she's just fucking scary.

Sounds like common-sense advice (maintain a calm, relaxing environment to reduce pregnancy stress) mixed with batshittery. Same with every other type of spa/relaxation-woo. "ASMR" is just a made-up term for the euphoric feeling you get when watching The Joy of Painting on a quiet afternoon while receiving a scalp massage.

That video is like throwing me back with women who thought I was attractive, gross. Constant whispering is annoying, and I don't want to be that close to a woman and hear her breathe (I mean, I do this as a nurse, but it's totally not excessively intimate.) Talking softly, talking quietly is pleasant. Whispering, like in the video, is annoying and inappropriate in normal conversation.

I'm going to completely ignore the article, and say that people came out just fine without weird parenting choices.

If there was a way to ban op until they came in this thread and explain it I would do it.

your op made no sense. Why link the whispering chick video and complain it drives you nuts if you're only talking about babies in the womb?
