FFXI crashing (PC Version)

So I switched last year to PC FFXI after years on a workhorse of a PS2. My Playonline the last 2 weeks cannot let me log in to FFXI; I get through the Playonline log-in, turn on FFXI, and when its done loading the zone my character was last in, it crashes and the window says "Playonline viewer has stopped working" and Microsoft Windows gives me only a 'Close Program' option. I've tried trouble shooting it as best I can without uninstalling cause I've heard its borderline impossible to uninstall Playonline without going into the registry. Does anyone know a non-uninstall way to alleviate this issue?

I've played with the display settings on Windows and Playonline and I've run the 'check files' option on Playonline.

I assume it worked at some point, and hasn't worked the last two weeks? If I read you right?

It's not impossible to un-install, but the freaking 22k update files always sucks.

Vista. Also my CD/DVD-Rom drives don't open anymore, game was a digital download via Gamestop.com online. Worked fine for a year then stopped for no reason, made no significant operating system changes, no products installed, no settings changed. Boom. Done working.

Vista has a nice little system restore built in.

I'd just roll back to before the problem started, you won't lose any documents or files you have created since then, but it will undo whatever got corrupted.

Should take like 15 minutes.
