It's one thing to complain about Monsanto and its business practices and it's something else entirely to talk about genetic modification of food.

To some extent people should know what is going into their food but there is a point where that knowledge devolves into rampant paranoia fueled by people who have no fucking background in chemistry or nutrition.

For me it would be too many years of books and movies and a distrust of science and/or research done for financial gain. Generalizations based on whatever scare tactics the media uses, but I would trust results more if they came from some place run through government grants and not a business corporation looking to patent the results and make millions.

This has nothing to do with the unethical farm practices (chicken coops, etc) and poor farming techniques (corn-fed animals, etc) - just pure science? If so, fuck those guys. I do have problems with that other shit, though.

Yeah, are people really unaware that these companies will literally do as many studies as it takes to get a favorable result, publish that study, and then slap all the researchers with NDA's while burying all the other unfavorable studies? You end up with the case where removing studies where funding stems from those with interested parties completely turns around the results of meta studies. Not only that, if a particular school is doing research into something they don't like, they'll give massive amounts of money to a school with the stipulation (implicit, of course) that the research stop.

This wasn't meant to be an argument for or against whatever the fuck facebook people are doing nowadays, just as a counterweight to what seems like the knee-jerk-like reaction of people blindly jump onto the bandwagon of bad company-funded scientific studies.

The need for GMO's exists due to corporate greed, it's not born out of necessity. Just like most of modern medicine, the most effect drugs are merely extracts of already existing natural medicine.

The only way to even be safe from GMOs is to buy all your shit off farmer's markets, and most of the time you still don't know unless you know what farm it comes from.

I'm not paranoid of this shit because I know all the junk food I've ever had is probably worse than any unlabeled GMO produce I've had, plus all the meat that only comes from the same 1 or 2 slaughterhouses in the country.

This definitely happens, but it's not new and / or limited to the GMO industry. Literally pick any science or technology that is profitable and you see similar behavior.

Of course it isn't, though it should be. Knowing better would require conducting research, and actually understanding things. They don't have time for that; they have a casual interest.

People like that, who are unfortunately the majority, see a scary headline, take it at face value, and then they spread the word, because it's fun to brainlessly chit-chat. "Oh, did you know about this?! It's awful! I can't believe I've been doing this for all these years..." And then, in the specific case of modified foods, I'm sure that most of the people who complain about them keep on eating them anyway, as they don't even research as to what's modified and what's not. Again, that would require effort. Now, that's fine with me—it means that said foods aren't going away, as they still sell—but it means that most of them are no more effective at changing the world than a fly buzzing in your ear. They're just annoying, and ultimately forgettable.

Consider all of the people who were actually hippies in the 1970's that grew up to be Fox News's greatest fans—they were "flower children" because they listened to those who spoke the loudest, and because they thought it was fun to be against "the man," not to genuinely put any effort into giving a shit about anything. (Not to say that none of them did, as some obviously did care, but we're making an example out of a specific archetype here.) They were casually liberal because it was fun, and spoke of youth, and then they grew old and thought they were stupid, disrespectful children, and that conservatism is the way and the life.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's precisely the sort of fair-weather liberals you're following. They're likely interested in whatever seems provocative and rebellious, even if it's unsubstantiated.
