FFXIV-App: What are the forum and official rules around this?

If this is against forum rules please just close this, but searching did not find any topics on this.

Generally SE has always been very anti third party software, but heard somewhere that it may change in ARR? xivdb has a link at the top of their site advertising the ffxiv-app that looks to be a chat parser and also "monster/character information widget". Curious if anyone has any information about this around if we can talk about it on BG and also if it is against TOS with SE?

Yeah, knowing SE and addons in the past...they won't take too kindly to TOS...but many new MMOs favor addons....we will have to feel them out in the next coming of weeks!

No one can you tell you definitively except for S-E's banteam/e-lawyer division. What I can say is that, throughout the entirety of 1.0, various player-developed chatlog parsers were used extensively. Screenshots and discussions revolving around usage of such were relatively commonplace on the official forums. I have never heard of anyone receiving action against their account for the usage, distribution, or discussion of chatlog-based combat parsers.

SE did temp ban and occasionally delete threads that linked to the parser. Guess it was something not strictly enforced in 1.0.

Temp ban? Where? lol; I haven't been banned, temp or perm. No warnings. SE has my full name, address, info and I've spoken directly with the team regarding it. Just saying I've also handed over the full source to Dev-Japan during my interview for development.

technically, like wow, they most likely have a "You don't talk about it, we don't know about it" policy. They probably won't do anything to care unless it starts circumventing game mechanics in some way.

Basically this. Also, they are adding official support for 3rd party add-ons to the game similar to WoW a few months down the road, which in itself shows a much different stance on earlier policies.

Forum ban*, should have clarified lol. I can't remember if it was FFXIV App or the other parser that tachikoma worked on but I do remember SE erasing a thread or 2 that linked to the parser.

I remember they closed a 120 page thread in beta about addons and dps meters; that was pretty sad lol

I would imagine that they don't want anything outside of their addon system they are creating. As someone said, they plan to add a flash? (there was some debate on this, but that was the last I heard) addon packet for people a few months down the line, so once that is out I am sure any approved parsers would be ones through that system.

As for bg fyi, we have an SE rep that checks the forums, and our usual policy is until the rep says "no" then it's ok. And fyi they have said no to thinks like bots/hacks for 11, but not for windower/parser talk, so there's that.
