BG Travel: Friday night in NYC for business, any spots to hit?

I'm staying in Newark on an upcoming Friday night and am planning to take a train to Manhattan, just not sure where to go from there. I don't have anywhere to be the day after except to make my way out to upstate NY on Saturday, but I will be going solo on this trip. Any good dives or craft beer meccas people can recommend would be awesome. I've heard Williamsburg is a neat area but haven't made it out that way. My buddy used to live in Bushwick, though I don't have too much interest in going back there.

Beer Spots:

Proletariat - Amazing beer bar in the East Village. If you are a big beer fan, it's criminal to skip this place. They will have beers you will only see once.

The Blind Tiger - One of the original beer geek bars. Can be a little loud and rambunctious on weekend nights but it's worth a stop. In the West Village / NYU Area so it's a good to mix this with a walk through Washington Square Park a few blocks away. Newly redone and you'll remember seeing it in a bunch of movies.

The Ginger Man - Another stalwart beer institution. It will be crowded. It's in Midtown. It's worth it. Giant tap selection and they'll have some weird shit too.

The Pony Bar - Has two locations (maybe 3 now). One is on the Upper East Side, pretty far out of the way. The other is in Midtown West / Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. Google them to find their current selections, all pours are $6 and they will sometimes have a nice rare find. I'd say this is the last of the places you want to go of the one's I've listed as it's a pretty standard bar setup aside from their focus on craft beers. Food is decent but kinda price-y for what you get. Get the chips if you do go. Get vinegar with them.

Dive Bars.

My personal favorite is Blue and Gold 79.

It's cash-only, cheap as all hell and full of a strange crowd when it's not Friday/Saturday night. It's in the East Village and it's basement level. I have a lot of fun in this place but it can be shitty on Fri/Sat nights as it pulls the student crowd in.

Other dives - Rudy's, Subway Inn, Jeremy's Ale House.

Google em. I prefer Jeremy's in the summer or winter to watch baseball or hockey. Cheap ass beer. Ruby's and Subway are as old as New York and they pull a really eclectic crowd. The problem is that they have been on travel shows and I honestly haven't been back since they were. I don't think they've been ruined but they may not be the same.

I was in NYC a few months back to see Penn & Teller on Broadway.

I stopped at The Ginger Man and Rattle 'N Hum for some beers and both places were great.

Slightly off topic but if you want to get the best Manhattan in Manhattan go to the Blue Bar at the Algonquin. As for other cool bars I really wanted to go to PDT(Please Don't Tell) but didn't have time; it's a speakeasy style place with no signage and the entrance is through a secret wall in a phone booth.

Totally forgot to add this. If you're there on a Friday, there usually a guy named Gregory working. He's a man of many talents and has some great stories.

Middletown? Think it's pretty small-time but if there's anything around there I'm open to suggestions.

Eh.. That's between Port Jervis and Newburgh. Kinda Rust Belt-y. I don't know much about that area.

I'd have to recommend if you do go to Brooklyn got to hit up Tørst (Evil Twins bar) and the owl farm for amazing beer selection, some of the best in the city.
Blind Tiger is worth the stop if you don't mistime it and catch the huge suit and tie crowd rush. It's cramped and dark as possible in there.
I definitely recommend Pony Bar and I'm surprised nobody mentioned Barcade yet. The one on 24th is my personal favorite.

I honestly don't like Barcade. I live around the corner from that one and I have yet to enjoy going there. Their selection is good but I guess I don't like the crowd much.
