This one is a headscratcher... they already gave us a backstory on this and we saw how Azaziel was going around in the early 70's and was matching up strong willed people so that they could make children to become the vessel for Lucifer. He was the one that got John and Mary together and he eventually killed John in order for a crossroads deal to be made with Mary. He brought John back to life in exchange for a visit to baby Sam 10 years later to do his blood ritual. I'd rather they had just done Wayward Sisters to continue the series without the two main characters. It would've been a nice change of pace to have a non Winchester dealing with all the monsters.
