I'll just say Dream Theater as a whole. Every single member is such a virtuoso of their respective instrument. Not to mention John Petrucci (guitarist) performs at G3 with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. Not only because of his technical ability, but his music has feeling to it, rather than just mind-numbing speed.

They sound technically amazing, the keyboard/guitar solos are awesome, and they consistently create complex riffs and melodies.

IMO, one of the best bands in the world, and also one of the most unappreciated.

Aswell as that, Led Zeppelin were a major milestone in Rock and have influenced a ton of modern bands (e.g. Tool, quite clearly), so I'd say everyone from Zep would be justified in being mentioned.

As for how music is written, I'd say Stephen Malkmus of Pavement and his two sidebands that formed when Pavement broke up.

    Bassist: Les Claypool (Primus)
Guitarist: Doug Martsch (Built to Spill)
    Singer: Emily Haines (Metric)

Seeing G3 people, Dream Theater/LTE members (Petrucci can be in either of the afforementione categories), John Butler, and John McLaughlin makes my penis quite happy d('-'*)

    That being said;

Guitar: Shawn Lane, Buckethead, Guthrie Govan, Stochelo Rosenberg (holy shit I could make this a long list:X, I'll stop with those 4)
Bass: Jonas Hellborg, Billy Sheehan, Victor Wooten
    Keyboard: Shawn Lane, Jordan Rudess
    Drums: Virgil Donati

All of the above people are pretty omfgwtfsplosionly good at their instrument of choice (especially Lane and Govan), so check 'em out .

Edit: Just to give you an idea of Shawn Lane's technical abilities: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDEbsurjqsU (of course he wrote and played plenty of beautiful, thought provoking music; I just wanted to give you an idea of what he could do)

Mikael Åkerfeldt, he's god in the form of a Swede.

Bass: Jaco Pastorius (Solo, Weather Report, Joni Mitchell), Geddy Lee (Rush), Billy Sheehan (Solo, David Lee Roth, Mr. Big).

Pastorius is unbelievably stunning fretless bass work, covering everything from bebop to cheesy soul-funk. Lee and Sheehan, just high-speed rock bass solo craziness.

Guitar: Steve Vai (Solo, Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth), Michael Romeo (Symphony X), Herman Li (Dragonforce)

Vai's work with Zappa and Roth is pretty freakin' nuts. In terms of the largest amount of 'meedley meedley meedley meeee!' you can fit into one song, he's the king. His solo work has some innovative things going on with harmonies and delays too. Li and Romeo are just pure silly power metal nonsense, but fuck it, I love that crap.

Drums: Martin Lopez (ex-Opeth), Gene Krupa (Benny Goodman), Neil Peart (Rush).

Lopez' work on Opeth's Damnation, Deliverance and Blackwater Park albums is both technically astounding and immensely catchy. Easily my favourite metal drummer. Krupa's been dead for 34 years this autumn, but he essentially created the image of the modern drummer, as well as playing the drums on a load of great big band jazz tunes. Peart plays drums for Rush, which should say enough about how good he is.

Voice: Devin Townsend (SYL, Solo, Steve Vai), David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Mike Patton (Faith No More).

Townsend's and Patton's voices are pretty similar in range, in that they could probably sing anything. Their ability to combine such a range with such emotion is pretty mind-boggling in my eyes (ears?). David Gilmour's voice is nothing like that, but it has some quality to it that always hits me in the right place. Check out his solo live DVD for him doing an acoustic Shine on, you crazy diamond. Just him and a guitar, it's astounding.

Keys: Bill Bailey (Comedian), Dave Brubeck (Solo), Matthew Bellamy (Muse)

More widely known as a comedian than a musician, Bill Bailey is in fact a prodigously talented comedy keyboardist. He once reworked the theme from "Dr. Who" into a Belgian jazz tune, complete with commentary in French. Hilarious guy. Dave Brubeck wrote the book on jazz piano and annoying time signatures. Bellamy does big sweeping arpeggios while singing falsetto and playing guitar with his toes. Or something.

Other: Pablo Casals (Cello), Charles Mingus (Double Bass, composer).

Casals' renditions of Bach's cello suites are masterpieces of interpretation. Stretching or shortening every note to bring out the full emotional content of the melody, it's very different from the clipped and precise style in which Yo-yo Ma plays the same pieces. Better, in my opinion. Mingus is a favourite of mine not just for his 20-minute jazz odysseys, but because he came up with a system for teaching your cat to use the toilet.

So yeah, that's a pretty broad cross-section of my favourite musicians. I'll probably remember more as soon as I hit "submit" though.
