    nVidia 8500GT, Vista, and FPS

    Ok

So I got a new PC with a nVidia GeForce 8500GT 256MB card. The computer also has 32-bit Vista (I know, I'm stupid for getting Vista)

I installed FFXI and did the registry tweaks and all that good stuff and the game looks awesome, however my FPS is not that great. I'm getting an average of around 13-16 FPS, when with this video card it should be a lot higher.

Please help me find some drivers that could fix this FPS problem. The company I got it from said that the drivers for Vista are relatively new so it may be some time before nVidia releases drivers that can fix this problem, but after searching previous threads, I found that people with similar problems with nVidia and Vista were able to solve their problems.

    Thanks.

What drivers(version) are you currently using? Do you have any problems with any other games or just FFXI?

I just got this computer yesterday so I don't have any other games on it yet.

Also, how do you check what version drivers you are running?

You can check either through the nVidia control panel or go to your control panel, click the system icon > hardware tab. Click on Device manager. Expand/drop down your display adapters and you should see your nVidia card listed. Right click it and go to properties where you'll see a driver tab. Click that and it should have your version information.

You've got the most recent drivers. I would go into the nVidia control panel and tweak your cards settings there. If it's a new PC, the GPU is probably all set to default settings. You can change your refresh rate, your 3d settings, your video settings, and a slew of other settings. I'd be more specific but I'm at work and can't pull my settings up. If you don't have this fixed by 4:30est today, I'll post my settings when I get home if you want.

I'm not sure how your nVidia control panel is setup but here are a few things that I changed.

I have image settings set to high quality, Anti-aliasing to 4x, and Anisotropic filtering to 8x. Those were the only 3 things that I can remember changing in regards to my vid cards when I first got them. Basically all of my other settings for my vid cards are basically default(they're all maxed because nVidia desktop changed the settings for what it thought was right for my system).

I had both of them over clocked as well at one point but rolled them back to default timing.

Hope this helps, if it doesn't, I'll ask my buddy who basically knows nVidia products inside and out.

my FPS improved by a few frames, but it should still be more. I'll continue to play around with the settings.
