    GameGuard and system problems?

    i planned to buy (reserve, to be able to play closed beta) of sword of the new world: granado espada.

    but after reading some comments about it, apparently, the game uses the GameGuard system that "takes over" certain OS functions and shuts them down, causing other programs needing the functions to run, to stop.

    i was just wondering if this is, at all, dangerous to a system in any way.
    looks like an interesting game, but...not if its risking the safety of my laptop/desktop.

    not really, as you can always just restart your computer if for some reason the program won't run without a restart. i think most things it kills aren't really common either, like outlook.

    Any program with the potential to fuck with the OS and it's operation... {No thanks}

    Welcome to any shitty game out of Korea, except for iRO (Which has GameGuard in Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. They just don't want to pay the license fee for it over here.)

    This is why I don't play maplestory.

    Just for fun we cracked gameguard in an hour at work a few years back.. so it doesn't really stop cheats anyway. It does NASTY stuff though such as using undocumented win32 system calls to gain raw access to IO.

    You would think anti-virus software would detect gameguard and refuse to let it run, but that just goes to show how worthless AV software is.

    doesn't PB essentially do the same thing as gameguard now? it installed two services and a kernel-level driver...

    The most scary thing about PB is that it allows sever admins to take screenshots of your desktop...

    I absolutely consider it a security breach* if installed on a machine.. but it isn't really in the same league as "GameGuard". I wouldn't be afraid to use it on a dedicated gaming machine that wasn't used for anything else financial or sensitive.

    (*any software that requires administrator access to install or run is)
