What's the most loose change you saved?

I just spent half the day counting out all of the loose change I've collected over the past 4-5 years. It filled an entire plastic gallon water/milk container.

Grand total, after removing all of the Canadian currency, $485.

How much have you saved up before in loose change?

I've thought about that, but I didn't want to give up 10% to them, and I know you can avoid that 10% charge by spending the money at certain places like Amazon.com or iTunes, but I don't need it. I have 1 credit card where I get Amazon.com points, so I have alot of gift cards to them, and my other credit card I got 50 free songs on iTunes.

I use the commerce banks penny arcade, doesn't charge any 10% bullshit like coinstar.

I had 500$ recently from counting, but I typically go every month or 2 and get around 50-100$ each visit. My parents though... they filled an entire water cooler up with coins, to the top. The thing weighed so much... It had to have well over 1000$. I don't want to know how much was actually in it, since my little jar could hold 50-100$ and that thing was a good 20x as many coins. They ended up getting one of those little machines that sorts the coins and then they wrapped it up and it just sits in their room in a bag - i steal some sometimes ;3

What is a bank's policy on returning coins all wrapped up and stuff?

I think all you need is your phone number and home address on it. I remember having to do that when turning in like 5 wrapped stacks of domes a few years ago.

Re: What's the most loose change you saved?

I keep a jar in my room, empty the change from my pockets into it everyday. last time i cashed it in (just about a month ago) got $200 out of it, used it all to fund a BBQ.

for people trying to cash in their change, and not getting ripped off by Coinstar, here in NYC commerce bank has "penny arcades" its coinstar minus the fee, you dont even need to be a member of the bank to use it. it gives you a voucher, take the voucher to the counter, they give you your money. dunno if commerce exists outside of NYC though lol

Being a manager at a grocery store had perks. Used coinstar but turned the key so I didn't have to pay a fee. :D

I don't understand paying money to convert coins to cash...

Isn't that what a bank is for?

They also have this deal at banks where you can deposit a check there and get 100% of your money from it instead of paying a large fee to a check cashing place..

Some banks will do it for you (if they have a high-powered coin counter), others won't, and have you roll it yourself. I had nothing to do all day so I did it, but others are equally happy to give up 8.9% to have a coinstar machine do it for them. I estimated my jug held about $500 so I wasn't about to give up $44.50.

I just keep coins in a Pringles can on my desk. It usually ends up being around $80-$90.

I take it to Coinstar or w/e it is in Albertsons because I am lazy, and I can just buy some Dr. Pepper while I am there. >_>

I actually just read an interesting article that recommends cashing in your change every 1 to 2 months and depositing it into a savings account so you can actually accumulate some interest. I never considered that.

Then there's that bank thing when you use your checking card it sends the "leftover cents" into your savings account.

Re: What's the most loose change you saved?

~$100 worth of pennies is my life time accumulation of coins. Everything nickle and up ends up in a vending machine at some point or another. What do you guys do that causes you to end up with so much change? It's always falling out of my pocket into some random chair so I purposely go out of my way to make sure I can pay with a card instead of cash.

I pay with cash only when I'm gonna scam wal-mart and return my broke-ass product in the new product's case.
