Playing AVI files on PS3 from a LinkStation Harddrive

I have a Buffalo LinkStation that my PS 3 will recognize, but anytime I try and play an AVI file I get "The data is corrupted". I searched everywhere I can think of and the only way I can find is to have it threw a PC Network using either Nero Ultra Edition 7 or TVersity. Anyone know a way I can just use my LinkStation minus my PC having to be on?

ps3's can only play mpeg2 and mpeg4, if it isnt in that format, you have to run something like Tversity to convert it.
