Sandworms: Vermin, amorphs, or something else?

Was it ever confirmed what sandworms are? I think people just said they are amorphs 'cause other "worms" (regular land worms & leeches) are. However, one universal trait among all amorphs is that they are soft and squishy, and sandworms seem to have a crunchy exoskeleton. Hell, there's that sandworm shell in the .dats. ("A chitinous plate that protects the body of a sandworm.")

So, does anyone know for sure?

Aquans intimidate Sandworm. Therefore, Sandworm is an amorph. (Tested with Carrie iirc)
