Advice on future mmorpg options

As we all know WoW has been the dominant force in the fantasy MMORPG community, pretty much blowing away all other competition in terms of total subscribers. FFXI during its time has also been a fantastic game, however after several years of being involved with both games another possible alternative is something that I am deeply looking foward to.

The biggest issue with a lot of the up and coming fantasy games is that they seem to be largely focused on PvP rather than PvE. Although I'm sure this will spark the interest of a lot of those hardcore pvp'rs, I enjoy the aspect of PvE content far more than fighting against other players. My question to you all is, what possible options (Future or Present) should I take a look at as alternatives to WoW/FFXI that might match what I'm looking for?

I'm personally looking forward to AION. It's known as a PvPvE game because there are aspects of both genres. From their website:

What are the rewards and encouragements for PvPvE?

The basic reward in PvPvE is the same as in all other combat, experience. You will
gain experience from killing both mobs and PC opponents in the Abyss. By collecting
”PvP-points”, players can also gain access to very good high-end items, which
otherwise can only be crafted.

There are also indirect benefits, since PvPvE in a way is a method to gain control
of castles which come with a wide array of benefits themselves.

Isn't Aion gonna be directed at the asian market, just with releases in europe/us akin to ffxi? I'm pretty damn wary to play another foreign game seriously after seeing how SE dealt with the NA's and our input :/

NCSoft doesn't deal with the NA community like Squeenix did. If Aion is anything like Lineage II, it's gonna be absolutely amazing.

Warhammer is going to be kick-ass... DAOC was amazing. AION looks great, but I wasn't a big fan of the Lineage II grind, so hopefully they don't make too similar to that >.> Age of Conan looks pretty good, but you'll need a powerhouse machine to get the most out of it.

From what I read Warhammer is almost entirely a pvp game. It looks really cool, but pvp just becomes so stale for me and I really enjoy PvE content. Aion seems interesting, however I am really hesitant about any games directed at an Asian market due to the afformentioned grind fest crap which completely sucks. -.-

I dunno, maybe the best bet is to stick with WoW. Although it's far from the perfect game, Blizzard does do an awesome job at appealing to its community, so its probably the safest option.

Lineage2 did so many things wrong, yet it's so enjoyable despite itself. If NCSoft can bring in some semblance of balance, not alter the game to obsolete half the classes, and figure out how economies work then I have hope for Aion being very playable.

Main problem I had with LII was the typical Korean MMO grind.
They said that it was supposed to be more similar to western games in terms of experience gain and whatnot, so I think it will be far less of a grinding game.


From what I've seen of Aion so far, I think it will be the game to play.

I don't mind the grind in L2. It's sort of relaxing. Then again, I have a SE on a 2nd account, so I can afford to be self-sufficient when I want to be. That eliminates most of the stressful (read: slow) part of the grind.

Well, Warhammer is not entirely a PvP game. In fact, most beta testers and journalists say that its a great mix between PvE and RvR. I see Mythic's public quest system being something that is going to set a trend for MMOs. I mean, seriously, if you'll stick with WoW... you'll most likely enjoy WAR >.>

If you're looking for a PVE game, hold out on Blizzard's next MMO. It's still in development (early stages, hush hush), but there's a good chance it'll be more PVE based than PVP based. If you're looking for something closer to being ready, Aion is really the only thing that looks decent (and by looks I mean concept and graphics, if could end up being awful).

You're kidding yourself if you think WH is gunna be more than a little bit of PVE. They're trying to develop it as a PVP based MMO.

If Blizzard's next MMO has anything to do with starcraft then...meh. I'm not a big fan of the whole sci-fi thing and I'd much rather stick with the fantasy genre regardless of whether the game itself is good or not.

WoW is fun and all, but getting stuck on Kael is just blah especially when he's not even that difficult. That and the fact that pvp becomes boring after a while just makes me feel like perhaps I should find something else.
