Just a thought I had. What all is checked exactly on your background? Is it just jobs and criminal record? More? Is there a way to do one on yourself? Mainly I ask because i'm recently moved to a new town and the commute of 30 minutes with current gas prices is getting me down and i'm looking for a new job. I dont remember all my past employers names or when I worked for them. To those of you who do the hiring in your company or w/e, what do you look for? How hard is it for a part-time college student to land a full-time job making more than $8.50? I'm sure there are some other questions I cant think of atm, but we'll start here.

Fingerprints + criminal records. Yes, you can get one yourself. The agencies get it from the Dpt. of Justice, and of course, it's sealed. Usually your employer hires an agency so you won't have to spend a dime.

most just ask for 2-3 most recent jobs, though at this time in life a resume should always be kept handy and up to date. I think a basic criminal background check is done, basically looking for felonies, hell I have background checks done through the FBI/State Police/BATFE daily for gun sales and they don't tell us jack as to what people have on their records, so idk.

Pretty much what everyone else said, but background checks will also produce misdemeanors. Basically... do you have anything to hide? If you don't then you have nothing to worry about... if you do, well be honest and don't apply for a job that you know you don't have a shot at once your results come in. I don't think most background checks look for past employment, employers just want to make sure they aren't gonna hire somebody who can get them into legal trouble

I hire production workers in a warehouse and light-production environment. I'm really lax, I ask people during interviews "if I gave you a drug test, would you pass it?". You'd be amazed how many will tell me up front that they wouldn't. I tell them to clean out and come back. What I look for is 2 things. Honesty and Cleanliness. It's amazing how hard it is to get either of those. People will show up to interviews and smell like they haven't bathed in 4 days. Shit's ridiculous. Of course if I interviewed staff for executive positions, it'd be a bit more intense, but we have a board of directors for that. For part-time jobs that something like a college kid would do, I don't really scrutinize a person too much.

This is taken from a privacy rights web site, and includes all the things that are available on public record. Obviously the level of detail and how many fields, and how deep into the individual field the employer will dig is based on the type of jobs.

Some government jobs for instance, not only will dig into your background, but the backgrounds of your family, etc.

Military records
State licensing records
Drug test records

I'm sure the drug question is what his company is looking for rather than what he is looking for personally.

you could definitely consider their answer to the question as being part of those two things
