Putting male connectors on the ends of RJ-45 CAT5 cable standard question

Tried looking up information online about it. And I've found alot of good ones on how to wire/crimp or whatever.

But I see there are different standards? Which standard do I follow for just a basic internet ethernet cable? Or are they all pretty much the same and just color/differences?

edit: I'm guessing T-568A standard is what I should go with?

Depends on if you want patch or crossover. For patch, use either A or B (it actually doesn't matter as long as both sides are the exact same, you could do whatever you wanted if they match.) For cross over, do one side in A, and one side in B.

If you didn't know, patch is for Computer -> Router/Modem and Crossover is for Computer -> Computer, etc. so do whichever one you need.

    and yes, T-568 is correct.

Yeah I just need a patch, no crossover. Thanks, just wanted to make sure.

The EIA/TIA standards are good ways to keep everything uniform, but you don't have to use them, so long as both ends are properly matched; for a patch or straight-through cable, they should be identical when you hold them up; for a cross-over, you swap pair 1/2 with pair 3/6 (in terms of pinout).

True but to add you can use both cables and newer switches will usually pick up what cable you are using and adjust correctly.

some do and some don't and whats worse is that some combination switch routers don't have it on all ports so its good to keep in mind.

Solid ethernet cable is not really for patch cable use as it is for in wall installation. Stranded requires special ends and in some cases a special crimper. To be honest, if you want your cables to have a good chance to pass a signal test above the 100mbps speeds, just buy your patch cables premade.

    Cat 6 Network Cable

You really can't beat 15ft and 20ft premade cables at $3.52 and less.

Well I have two 200 foot rolls of CAT4e cable but with no connectors on the end, so that was the reason for the thread lol.

4e? Typo I assume? Cat 4 is token ring cable. ~16Mbps.

Anyway if it is solid core I would really avoid using it as patch cords. It doesn't take much flexing to break a core in the cable at the connectors. Strain reliefs will help a little. Pull the 200ft rolls though the walls and terminate on keystones. It isn't all that bad. I wired my house in about 4 hours pulling quad shield and a pair of ethernet cat5e cables around the house.
