Dual Boxing knocking out my internet connection?

I use cable internet, with Rogers (Canada) and recently got a new computer (yay) and was running 2 characters on the same machine with windower, when both got R0'd, net went out too

I reset my modem, turned it off, left it disconnected for 30s+ etc, restarted my computer a couple times, renewed IP, no dice -- eventually I figured there was something with my internet provider so I called them but the net came back on 20 minutes later while I was still on hold

I don't know much about computers but could 2 instances of ffxi make me lose connection? my old computer couldn't handle it for different reasons, but as I didn't bother to keep waiting to speak with my ISP I didn't find out if there was an area wide loss of service

also, i wasn't running much else at the time (no torrents)

What actually happened was your net went out, then your characters R0'd

ok good, thought that must be the case, but due to the fact my ISP is (oddly enough) actually pretty reliable, and this being the first time in ever that I've 2boxed for an extended period of time I thought perhaps something was up

pardon the nooby question, for all my logged hours on my computer I'm not the most tech savvy:\

    What's the router you use?

If it's that dreaded linksys one ......

EDIT: Or wait, is it just a modem? Or a hybrid.

problem seems to have solved itself, but ya, just modem, and no not linksys

I have an irrational fear of wireless connections, routers or god-forbid sharing a connection with another computer (a series of bad experiences and ill-timed instances of being unable to connect, items falling to the floor after all others passing etc)

goddamned torrents on my roomate's computer made ffxi unbearable, keeping me at a good R27-40 and S60-120 when I didn't merely disconnect

I had that before, coupled with the linksys router I basically R0ed after 2 to 60 minutes of gameplay time.

If you can encourage him to keep his upload limited (if it's unlimited then it'll what it can) it will greatly improve your gameplay.

Or kick his ass if applicable, I hated it back when I experienced such horror and I was unable to kick his ass because he played rugby and was too large/also too dumb to understand the upload thing.

not only do I have my own new internet account after the extremely brief shared net debacle, I switched to an entirely different provider; irrational perhaps but it suits me well, no real problems other than mentioned above in OP

so ya no need to change anything, pretty sure this was a one-off

also, my roomate has a good 100 pounds on me:\
