    PS3 is acting up

I am having some really irritating issues with my PS3.
When I turn on the PS3, nothing comes up. It's just a blank screen. I have inserted a few random discs to see if it would take it and then give it back, which it did. When I do this there is the "disc" icon on the top right of the screen, but that is the only image that gets shown.
My brother said (I wasn't home at the time of it's dieing) that he turned it on and the Sony background was there, but nothing else happened, so he restarted it. After he restarted it, it's been like this, with nothing there.
I can hear the system working, and there is hot air coming from the vents, so I am really not sure what to do. I've tried looking for info elsewhere, but I haven't found any.

I know that it is not the "red light of death" issue some people have, because the lights are all green.
I have also tried hooking it up to other TVs, using other cables, and nothing has changed.

If any of you have any idea of what is going on, or how to fix it, I would greatly appreciate it a lot!
thank you so much in advanced!

did you shut down your ps3 when it was saving a game or while it was updating?

And are you sure it's a ps3 problem not your hdmi cable problem?

I had this problem, hold the power button and the eject button until you hear like 2-3 beeps, it hardrestarts your ps3.

dont have to hold the eject button, just the power button for like 5secs, will reset you to standard rca video output

Yeah hold down power until you hear 2 beeps, will reset your video settings and it should work, if you're still having problems, you could try holding the power button down for 3 beeps (if you hold it for too long it will turn off the ps3, if you don't hold it long enough, you'll get the video reset again).

If you do it right it will bring up a menu, choose to restore system files, it will check your PS3 for corrupted files and fix them (Your save files and game sata won't be deleted btw, will all still be there).

If that doesn't work then I dunno

Thanks so much for the replies, but it still isn't working...
I have restarted it, and no matter how many times I do, it doesn't seem to do anything. But I can still hear the engine running.
As far as I am aware, there was so update being preformed, and nothing was being downloaded.
I have tried different HDMI cables, and the standard cable that it came with on an older TV. Still nothing...

Is there anything else you can think of that I could try? Or, am I probably going to need to send it into some place for fixing?

If its in warranty, 1 year, you can have Sony fix it for free. But if not I think they charge around $100.

You don't restart it, when you turn on your PS3, you hold down the power button for ~5 seconds. It really sounds like you just need to reset your video settings before you do anything rash.

PLAYSTATION 3 remembers the display settings you give it. If you are moving your PS3 between an SD and an HD TV, you may find you have a blank screen. Simply reset your PLAYSTATION 3 to restore the default SD setting in the following way: turn off the PLAYSTATION 3 system then press and hold the power button for approximately 5 seconds until you hear a beep. You can then use the Settings category in the XMB to configure your Display settings manually.

If this really isn't your problem- then ya, you will have to send it in.

I know this has been said, but you just made it sound like you were resetting your machine, not turning it on while holding down the button.

I've tried everything said above, except I don't know how to make it only beep twice, not three times like you said earlier Shojin

When I hold down the power button, it will beep 3 times, and nothing.
On the TV it even says the resolution is 720x480, so I know it reset it to SD
The only image I am able to get on at all is the "Disc Reading" sign at the top right corner when I insert a disc, but that's all.

I'm probably going to need to send it in, but it's just frustrating not knowing what is going on

    EDIT:
I just looked at the back of the PS3 and there is a red light where the "Digital Out (Optical)" Plug-in is, any idea what that might mean?

That's normal. "Digital Out (Optical)" is a plug that uses light to transfer sound info (instead of using the red and white plugs, or your HMDI you can use that). Nothing wrong there.

if you are seeing the disc spinning in the upper right then your video settings are fine and you borked the system by turning it off during an update
