What opinions do we have on this sword? I think I like the sword in theory for certain things but then the more I think about it - Joyeuse for things that wont fuck your day up, Hauteclaire for, "Oh shit, my day is about to get fucked up"

But at what point is shield skill +5 going to be equivalent, if not greater, than phys dmg -7% if any?

I'm just trying to get some input on this, like I said, I think I like the idea of this sword but at the same time I think I may be away from my PLD too long and stuck with a shitty PLD account that NEEDS shield skill.

It'll never beat 7% physical damage. If you don't have a haute, you could consider using it on things you don't want to feed tp with joyeuse.

At the end of the day its not ex. Which means it'll be a lot easier to get for people without a group of capable friends (or an endgame LS in Hauteclaire's case).

It's not a bad sword as far as AHable goes.

You never said you actually had one. In my opinion, if you aren't using Joyeuse, you should probably be using a Macuahuitl +1. The only real exception I can think of is if you are super tanking something, honestly. (Or have Excal or Burtang.)

The durandal point was just to demonstrate how little the AH 'defensive swords' really offer. How about "Would you redo DM just to get a Knight's Earring?"

If you're not using a joyeuse (lowman, low support, /war) what is +4 enmity doing for you that shield skill +5 wouldn't?

I already am not a fan of superfluous enmity gear, and even less of a fan of idling in it, so I'd love to understand exactly what situation +4enmity over the course of a fight would > half of a boxer's mantle - if you're already approaching the fight from a cautionary standpoint.

And yes, my hauteclaire got banned - now I need a new one - until then I'd like something to hold me over for early morning shit.

Edit for clarity: I'm still not even sure I like this sword, it's just so far your reasons against it are retarded. The "try it out for yourself" is more helpful than anything you've contributed thusfar.

This is the correct answer, and I know it. I'm a lazy asshole though and was wondering if anyone had already done the work for me.

It'd give you +4 enmity on all of your actions and shield skill +5 wouldn't <.< >.>

Edit: Cure cheat would just make the enmity even more useful <.< Like...PLDs swap to enmity for cures for a reason.

And uh, how often do you even need to use a cure cheat if you're /war? You should be taking at least some damage in theory.

I know you are just being good old angry Sath, but it would really depend on what you were low manning, and if slightly better hate control was an issue more than slight damage reduction. If you are that worried about getting shield blocks, you could use a Simba Buckler or a Sipar.




Edit: To really put it in perspective, if you don't care about your TP gain (which you wouldn't if you aren't using a Joyeuse, or TP spam is absolutely not an option) you could just swap your weapon/shield slots to optimize between having shadows up, and not having shadows up. Use Enmity/Shield Skill as appropiate. If you are doing stuff /WAR, I don't know what to tell you since that's a totally different set of circumstances.

I personally never worry about chainsaw +1 since I abuse the hell out of ritter / bqr / gigant C3 swap. I GREATLY dislike enmity gear that you don't put on then take off. I think it's a waste.

That being said I agree, idling in shield gear isn't useful 90% of the time but neither is hauteclaire. Which is why I asked the question. (many people who have hauteclaire use it 100% of the time and never get called out for it because it's gold and shiny, but the thing fucking sucks more than it doesn't)

Simba is a buckler. So it procs more often than Koenig or Terror. A lot of people like it predominantly for /nin to aid Ichi casting when shadows are dropped.

Simba Buckler has +2 Enmity, not -2 Enmity, if that's whats confusing you. It's a misprint akin to the old THF AF2 misprint (Pants) and Marduk Legs Enmity thing

Simba is just a size 1 shield with a very high (size 1) defense rating with +2 Enmity and some HP on it. It's nothing to write home about, but neither is the Sipar. Their only use is when you absolutely positively have to have the highest possible block percentage against some very difficult mob (generally for recasting shadows).

I never use my Sipar, but it's definitely the running gag in my shell that it is the ultimate shield, since it somewhat reflects the drop slot of Ridill, and D Ring. I even wore it for two whole weeks (outside of actual events) and didn't end up in the gimp thread. I was disappointed.
