Could I get a bit of advice?

Hey guys, welcome to bullshit life problem thread from poster #487!

On today's platter, we're offering a silly ol' scenario that needs a hint of perspective and advice.

Synopsis: I'm a community college student with a part-time job tutoring middle school kids. I have a 3.5+ GPA and work 6hrs or so a week (not a lot of work, but it plays $20.00 an hour). I'm approaching my 4th year at community college (a switch in major mid-way through my 2nd year prolonged the visit), and I planned on staying to save money. This 4th year would be my last year, and I'll be transferring to a University of CA Fall of '10.

Amongst all this, my dad is constantly hassling me about getting another job for "experience". I've worked in 2 department stores and had an inventory job; I've learned how to interact with people and do my job well, that's really all the experience I can get pre-career atmosphere. He calls me every day asking what I've done for a job, even though I've got a big plate of school work and a part-time job already. Sure, it wouldn't kill me to get a 2nd job, but there's really no reason for me to get one. He constantly compares me to my two sisters and brother, saying how they've "done there part", and how I haven't grown up at all (not moving out, on my own). No shit? I'm being logical and saving money at a community college.

Anyway, my question is: Am I at fault telling him to back-off and let me handle these issues myself? Or would you agree his argument is just, saying I need to get a 2nd job?

Your major is? If you are going into education i don't see why you'd need another job for "experience". Otherwise, it's a good idea to find a job that relates to your career path.

A second job will exhaust you. Trust me.

    This would be correct.

Your father isn't completely in the wrong either, I can understand his desire/concern for wanting you to have that experience leading to your landing a job after graduation since experience will help. He shouldn't be down your throat about it, though. My father was for a bit about this, but he got the idea when I stopped talking to him. What's more important is that you continue school since you can work and still get your degree. Many good 4 year universities allow you to take fully online courses where you take the exam with a proctor, and some without one.

Edit: It's also possible to transfer credits over for public university/college courses, but talk to your advisor about it

Do you work for the district, or is it an independent tutoring service? If it turns out you're working for the district, I'd keep working for the district. They pay loads of money. To a peace the old man, you should apply for other higher positions within the district. At lest he'll know you're trying different things and he'll get off your back. If you happen to land a better job you'll be set. I work on my own and for the LACCD and it's really sweet.

Has he gone to post-secondary? I find that a lot of parents who have no clue truly act like it. Sure, you could get another job, but the excuse of 'experience' when it comes to a job in a field that you're not interested in getting into (retail sales!) really doesn't make any sense. Dude needs to concentrate on himself because he seems much too concerned about what his son ISN'T doing and not enough on what he is. Not saying he doesn't get a say as your dad and, I'm going to assume, the one who pays for your schooling, but if it isn't about money, he should let you be.

    We've been over this.

You have no say when you arent paying the rent.

Get a second job and work your ass through college like the rest of us. Or get massive loans and live in the dorms and chill out.

Getting mad at your dad over his frustration at paying YOUR bills is retarded.

    He isn't paying the rent.

He isn't paying for college; financial aid + scholarships have essentially given me a full-ride.

    No.

Could you ask for more hours at your current job?

6hours a week isn't much at all, I can't imagine being loaded with schoolwork to not be able to work a couple extra hours, unless you're taking above 15 credits, or hard courses.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Curious to know what your major/career path is too.

Depending on that, I'd say keep the job you got. Quite frankly, in any interview if you can tie in the fact that "if I can handle middle school kids, I can handle anything." Any job can be worked to your advantage in an interview (I tutor as my second job too). Just the fact you have to work with the kids' needs that change on a daily basis is a good show of adaptability....unless you work for Kumon...then that's a sleep-job lol.

Then ya your dad's being a little silly. There's not going to be much "job related" experience you can get at the mall with that.

Actually, you know what you should do, for UC see if you can get to somehow work/volunteer/whatever for the sound guys for the theatre. (or local community theatre). It's probably not something you will get paid for, but you can do a show now and then on the side for "job-related experience". And that can be like a second job that won't burn you out.

When I went to college (obviously it's different for everyone) I worked as an assistant stage manager for fun. Full completions of a show (rehearsal/runtime) lasted about 2 1/2 months. So it's definitely doable if you find the right place and can take time off now and then.

i'd definitely say your best bet would be to grab some work-study stuff (if you can) at UC, and the idea to get a job in a theater somewhere doing some sound work is pretty awesome, probably pays fairly well and i'd imagine there aren't many people who do it or have it on a resume

You didn't mention the part where you are in a pretty popular local band, and that probably takes up a large sum of your time.
