Any ideas about level or content? This is kind of like just asking for recommendations about fiction.

Get them something on Epicurus or Diogenes of Sinope.
Dan Dennet.
The Bible
There are plenty of classic texts that any philosopher could use many copies of. If it's a gift, maybe find one in a nice binding or something, usually the classics are.
Anything by Plato or Aristotle is great. If they're more continentally minded, Descartes, Satre, Derrida, Nietzsche, Baudrillard; ethics: Kant, Rawls, Mill, Russell (actually Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy is quite an awesome read). I also like a bit of Wittgenstein and such as well. Really depends what sort of things they're into
But for a philosopher I really would get something that was nicely bound over trying to find something that s/he might not have. Oh yeah, there's a good philosophical joke book too, http://www.platoandaplatypus.com/ -- it's actually funny, if you're a philosopher![]()

Their areas of interest in philosophy are kinda crucial here. Can you buy them a subscription to a philosophy magazine, like the Philosophical Quarterly
