    Temporary crown (dental issue)

Okay, hey. I'm always the first person to tell people to stop asking BG Medical for advice and go see a fucking doctor, but I have a problem of my own. I had a temporary crown put on one of my molars last week. It fell off just a few minutes ago when I was brushing my teeth (gently, as per the dentist's instructions). I have a checkup appointment on Wednesday, where I'm sure they'll fix the situation. Is this situation serious enough to miss work tomorrow to have it reglued, or will I be okay until Wednesday? I'm kind of loathe to lose the hours, but I'm also loathe to lose the fucking tooth and/or inadvertently cause more damage that costs even more money to fix. HALP?

I'd personally call them first thing in the morning and ask what they suggest (if that situation is possible, if not I'd probably go to the dentist, because I'd be too worried otherwise).

You'll be alright, if its that soon. I wouldn't bother going in unless you have 100% insurance, as they'd be removing it / replacing it when you go back in anyway

Can't stick it back in there and have it sit in place?

The only issue is that I work at 8am, and the dentist's office opens at 8am. If I show up, it will be an issue to leave. If I don't show up, it will be an issue that I didn't call in earlier. If I know tonight that this is a serious problem, I can call when the manager gets there at 5:30.

Should be fine to go a day without it. The temp was more so you can eat without having to favor one side of the mouth over the other. There might still be a bit of adhesive on your tooth, but it's nontoxic and nothing to worry about. Just watch what you eat tomorrow, hot and cold liquids might be more sensitive there.

That's what I'm currently doing, but I have no idea how legit a solution this is. Am I gonna do serious damage to my shit in the meantime? If I eat tomorrow, is shit gonna get all up under there and be a real pain in the ass to have cleaned out? They placed the crown over a root canal job, and the last thing I ever want is them poking around inside my tooth again.

Works for me, then. Thank you! Oh, and I'm not gonna swallow this in the night or anything, am I? Should I take it out and put it back in tomorrow morning?

Yes, take it out when you sleep and wear it during the day to protect whatever work was done. If it holds in place on its own when you put it back in, that's fine. Best bet would see a dentist whenever you can. It takes all of 5 minutes to reapply whatever adhesive they used to keep it in place. After all, it's only a temporary crown so it's not meant to last through everything. Definitely avoid eating on that side if you can, or just chew very slowly. Worst thing that could happen is that you bite something and it gets stuck to the food you're biting, ends up being pulled out, and then you bite it and shatter it.

Might choke on it. Odds are its small, but you never know when you're sleeping.

You should probably get it re-glued before wensday. When I got a crown they told me to come back and get it re-glued if it fell out (and it was only in for 2 days)

I had a crown fall out about 2 years ago.

Never got it fixed. Still a bare post in my mouth.

I should probably get 'something' done though.

The process of making a crown goes something like this. Your dentist grinds down your tooth to make room for it and then takes an impression of what remains to send to a technician. The technician creates a crown based off of that impression, it's made to fit. The temporary crown is to protect the surface of your tooth so that when the permanent crown is placed it will adhere well. If your temporary crown falls off, then the surface of the tooth is exposed to the elements. The longer this occurs, the higher the chance that the bond between the permanent crown and you tooth will fail and you'll need to have the crown replaced (which works, but is not ideal because the crown was made to fit and the tooth is resurfaced.) Walking into your dentists office without an appointment to have them reset the temp (it only takes a few minutes) it is perfectly reasonable, I'm sure you dentist would actually recommend it.

Went thru similar situation. Temp crown fell off. Dentist people told me to reattach with a tiny dab of toothpaste. Very sensitive. Applying the toothpaste made it worse. Like biting into cold ic
