DualShock3 Joystick replacement?

Straight to the point: I game a shitload on PS3, and the left analog stick is worn in to the point where the upper-section of the location is floats within while held in place by the spring is past the point of being considered dead-zone, meaning in a lot of my games my dude starts walking forward even though I'm letting the stick idle.

Shit's annoying (especially in FPS where I inadvertently walk off a cliff ledge that I was camping at), and my Googlefu is failing to find me either a guide to fix it, or a place I can order replacement parts from if needed.

I'd rather spend $10-15 to repair mine than spend $55 on a new one.
(I'm located in Canada, so a lot of those sales I see from US suppliers for them are a moot point since shipping+border duty jacks the price up)

Happened with both my Sixaxis controller years ago, had a really hard time aiming in Dead Space because he would just randomly start walking. Couldn't find a fix for it myself, I tried a bunch of stuff. Seemed that Sixaxis were more prone to them, it happened to both of my brothers controllers too.

Got my first DS3 a few years ago and haven't had the same problem since. Analogs feel a bit more sturdy, but it sucks to hear that this can happen with DS3's now too.

Heh, it's been annoying me to no end in Dead Space, as the deadzone only becomes an issue when aiming for some reason, where-as walking around he sits tight when I need it.

I miss the days of the N64 controller. Was a cinch to fix, toss in some talcum powder, a new spring, and voila, good to go until the plastic wears off completely on the joystick itself, then order a replacement. >.>

DualShock3s on the other hand....I don't know how the fuck to fix those analog box thingies, especially when you can't really open them up without them from the board completely, sounds easier to just rip them off and solder on a new pair.

I'm pretty sure I read a guide somewhere about replacing the entire analog box easily.. don't know if I'm going to be able to find it again though.

This is a bit out of topic but my PC logitech controller (20 bucks) D-pad rubber keep on tearing after a few months. Any recommendations for a good controller that will last for more than ~4-5 months?

I've never had any controller do this too me. And I use them alot.. what the hell do you dudes be doing?

Playing too often? Went through 3 controllers so far in the past 2 years. All had the same problem of the D-pad rubber thing tears.

Hours and hours and hours of trophy farming, as well as a lot of games where holding 'up' makes you move 'forward'.

PS3 is by far the most used console I've owned in my life, and that's saying a lot given the amount of hours I put into Goldeneye on the N64.


I've only ever had the d-pad problem on my old NES controllers, along with the SNES ones (which I then replaced with $5 MadCatz controllers which were the absolute bomb, two sets of L/R, independent turbo switches for every button...). Not much I can say other than rubber just wears over time.

I had the same problem with gamepads breaking and such, so I bought a PS2 controller adapter for like 5 bucks and started using that and never had problems. For some reason PS2 controllers last forever
