Need a quick fix

Why are these grayed out? I like volume and network both in my bar :/

A wild guess would be that you have some other non-Windows application managing your sound card and network card, these applications usually provide their own system tray icons.

Hmm well I've had this computer for over a year now and yesterday is the first time I've noticed them gone when I went to adjust the volume.

It looks like that might be a problem with explorer in Vista. You can start the task manager via Ctrl+Alt+Del. Switch to the processes tab and end explorer.exe. Your start menu etc. will disappear, and at that point, in the taskman menu (under I think File...) you can select New Task and enter explorer.exe to relaunch the process. You should be able to check those boxes again after that.
