    Need a new Vid Card

This one keeps crashing my computer at random, and randomly causes windows not to show anything at boot up. So I need a new one, and I am no good with computer stuff to figure out what is good on my own. Pretty sure I have a random radeon right now.

It has to play all modernish games but most importantly, not be gay with FFXI. I keep hearing about random new cards are trouble with FFXI, having that not randomly lag/crash is top priority. D:

Do you have a general budget to look at? I don't think newer AMD cards have had issues, that's been more the nVidia thing, though they may have fixed it (finally).

Personally, I've been happy with my Radeon 6870 - no issues with FFXI, and has played everything else I've tossed at it nicely (including more demanding titles like Metro 2033).. It's about a $240 card - a 6850 is about $60 less, a 6950 is about $60 more. Any of those should work nicely for you.

While on the higher end, if you decide to go with a 6950, this article is definitely worth checking out.

I was reading this earlier today. It seems AMD's trick with soft-locking the cores is spreading from the CPUs to the GPUs.

Bumping this cause my vid card is causing me all sorts of rage lately. I have a Radeon 4850. Any way to know which card will work with my mobo/power/etc? I'm really bad at putting computers together and I don't want it to explode.

My current card is fantastic; except for the fact my PC will randomly crash, and randomly not display when starting up. Really aggravating because nowadays it takes like 5+ attempts to turn on the PC to get it to work, and it also crashes 4+ times a day.

Post your computer computer specs down to the motherboard model. We can help you decide.

You can usually look at Power/Heat/Noise roundups in reviews such as here.

A safe bet would be a 6850 - power usage is in the same ballpark as a 4850, and the reference design (at least) only uses one 6-pin power cable. If you have no problems running a 4850 (power-wise), then you probably won't have issues with a 6850 either. It'd also be a fairly nice jump in performance and features.

If you're not looking to spend quite that much, a 5770 would use comparably less power, and still be a performance upgrade.

You could also look at your PSU - if you have a 600W or greater, you should be pretty safe for most of what's on the market.

This program will tell you everything you need to know about your PC, and more. There is probably free (unpirated) software that will do it for you, but this is what I use.

Edit: Dxdiag like Melena said is probably much easier.

crucial.com used to have a program that you could run that would tell you the model of your motherboard as well as the kind of ram and max amount it could take. Can use that for the motherboard if need be. If not, just run dxdiag and that can get you everything as well.

This. The power supply should list its capacity on the label.

Replaced my 4850 with a GTX 460 back when XIV came out; I haven't regret it at all. Bought it at the recommendation of Sonomaa.

Been getting a lot of weird memory errors lately. Maybe it's that instead of vid card? Any way to test to see if anything is funked with my memory? D:

How is the dust level inside your case? Plugged up heatsink fins can cause all kinds of overheating mayhem.
