What are your opinions on each? Which is safer? And more importantly, which is cheaper? Is it common to split wither either amongst friends? Do you have recommendations on services or guides for either?

I used newsgroups like 5 years ago when I had unlimited access through AT&T, but haven't touched it since then and have no idea what the experience is like anymore. I'd imagine torrents are more plentiful and readily available, but I really don't know. Everything else that has depended on DDL sites has vanished now so even bothering with waiting for new places to crop up doesn't really seem worthwhile when the same things are still available elsewhere.

Find your way into private torrent sites, that's pretty much it. Otherwise, newsgroups are cheaper than seedboxes.

When you typically get into private trackers you shouldn't need a seedbox, but its nice to maintain ratio and an extra layer of safety.

€14.99 /month or 19.8063 a month. I split it with a friend, we also share accounts on private trackers (this is tricky). Since they monitor where you browse from and if they detect multiple people you will be banned. For this I let him teamviewer into my PC at home, but if you configure your seedbox, you could do all tracker browsing there.

1 TB of space, 5 TB of BW a month (this is external BW) all transfers to other people inside OVH territory is unmetered (this is lots of private tracker people).

The box does not come configured as a seedbox, you have to install everything yourself, but it was pretty easy.

i dig my usenet for sure. i use easynews/nzbs.org and newsleecher for the client. owned an account since 2009 and haven't looked back.

most prefer giganews from what i've heard.

I <3 the usenet. Have no problems with Astraweb. I use nzbmatrix for nzbs. Get in when they do their $11 a month unlimited plan. The only thing I've had problems finding on the usenet are animes. TV shows/Movies/Games/Software/Music/Ebooks has been pretty = to what I can find for torrents.

Already at that point as I think most are by now who'd even be interested, I'd just rather let a seedbox do the bulk of the work if I'm using torrents as keeping ratios and having to keep all the files stored until those ratios are filled gets old. I got accustomed to more or less everything being on MU such that I could throw links in jdownloader and walk away getting an automated 1MB/s+ download, so I'm looking to replace that convenience and availability.

Thanks for the breakdown! My ISP actually caps monthly download @250G so I wouldn't need anything quite that substantial, but it helps to get an idea. I didn't specify in OP since I was hoping for a big general collection of info.

gah, that's a large part of what I'm looking for, so that's unfortunate. Also audio VSTs and software which have been kind of a pain to find now as well. Plenty of torrents, but seeding's constantly a problem with something more niche than TV and movies, hence my draw to usenet.

For anime i use animebyt.es for anything not easily available on TT. Everything i've ever looked for has been available, with plenty of seeds, even for shows going back 20 years.

btw Zeb, with astraweb I'm seeing the $11/month unlimited but it's called Unlimited DSL except it states no speed limits, is that the case?

Yeah unlimited DSL is what you want. It's normally $15/month but they put it down to $11/month pretty often.

Yeah I got in on it through usenetreviews, thanks for the tip. I initially tried to do sign up with "Usenetserver" for $10/month but they rejected my card and then charged me $1 lol. Pretty awesome so far, though I'm not too crazy about sabnzbd in that my laptop wept for 2 hours while downloading and then attempted ritualistic suicide when it assumed without any confirmation that I wanted to extract a 7GB archive lol.

been using usenet for 4 years now (usenetserver.com), mainly because it's legal to download whatever you want in my country, as long as you're not uploading it + encrypted connections rock. recently got back into anime after a 2 years break and my usuall way of finding them is:

- go to anidb.net, search for your anime to find a good group release
- optionally check the filename on the group's site
- go to nzbindex.nl / binsearch.info and enter some words from the filename

as example, i was looking up madoka on anidb.net. yesy's subs got lots of good ratings so searched for "yesy madoka 720" on nzbindex.nl. tick the "show complete releases only" in the advanced search options and there you go. minimum size option also helps to seed out unwanted stuff.

i have sabnzbd+ running 24/7 on my ubuntu server and never had any troubles with it.
