Internet service loss during rain/snow (lolverizondsl)

So first off, I live in NJ, have verizon DSL. FIOS isn't here, Comcast service here is awful. So this is the... best?

For the past six months or so, I have connection loss during rain or snow maybe 3-4 hours into a storm. I've had this service for nearly 10 years, has never done this. Information I don't have is whether or not this is widespread or whether its just me. I've called 3 times, had techs out here 3 times. They tested my lines, you know, when its fucking sunny.

I'm trying to narrow the problem down. Something must be getting wet.. right? Exposed wire underground/in a box someplace? Has anyone had similar experiences/any idea wtf is goin on? I'm getting really tired of not having reliable internet just because it rains.

You can check your grounds and see if they made any connections/splitters that are exposed to the elements.

They recently had an installation policy change on how/what they ground to because so many were doing a shit job.

So the new saga now is that my home phone gets no dial tone. I can not figure out how that is possible and yet I still have internet access. Could power only be getting to a single phone jack?

Parental Units had the ... 4th or 5th verizon visit today while I was sleepin before work. The previous people said there was in fact corrosion in my box outside by the street.. Which I guess the whole damn thing has to be replaced. But the guy today mentioned that the main street a few streets over has some major, major issues that needs a big work order that verizon is basically going to drag its feet on and not do.

Says I should call public works or something like that and get a complaint going. lol I can't believe there's no dial tone, needs explaining.

I had the EXACT same problem 3 years ago. We replaced my modem, telephone outlets, Verizon came out to check their local box/telephone lines, and in the end, each time we did something to repair the problem, it didn't work at all or worked for 3-5 hours. Was really bad in October 2008 when it rained almost everyday for a month straight. My internet was out for 3 weeks straight, Verizon gave me no compensation for that period of time. So my solution was just to switch to Comcast. Never had a problem since and my DL speeds went from 700kb/sec-2mb/sec to 19-30mb/sec.

I had the exact problem and the exact same solution back in 07. Outages seemed to happen mostly during heavy snow. All verizon would do is try to upsell to a higher tier.

My work field office has verizon dsl and it also goes out in bad weather. We typically have more downtime in 1 week there than I have had with comcast in a 5 year period.

It might have to do with the quality of the existing lines in the area because I've heard people from different areas having all kinds of problems with comcast and then switched to verizon and had no problems.

I've had 2 techs out in the past 2 months looking into it and... obviously didn't do anything. Recently though the phone stopped working altogether (Yet the internet stayed up..?). And it wasn't just me, seemed to be various people around my block. They finally came out and did, you know, SOMEthing.. What it was, I don't know, was out at work.

So we'll see when it rains. Thinking about putting a trash bag over the phone box outside my house to see if keeping it dry fixes the problem. If they didn't actually fix it, I mean.

Happened to me. Techs checked the grounds, found nothing.

I went behind them and found an exposed cable that was broken in one area, and the wires were exposed.

I cut the cable and added fresh line, then put electrical tape over the connectors and buried it under 2ft of dirt. Never had an issue again. I moved since, so can't give you a long term prognosis.

That's probably what it is, though. It might also be inside, in an area that gets moist during high humidity times, like an attic or the insulation of the home.
