Need a replacement MOBO

My friend's PC died, and it's his MOBO. I need a replacement MOBO, he originally had a 965p series Gigabyte Mobo with a 775 socket. I can just get anything that matches that socket and that will replace his current mobo?

If it's too old, you end up pretty much having to buy used to find any selection. My Socket 478 mobo died after 5 years, and replacement with a used one with the same features was still $200-300, so I settled for less features. That mobo died after 6 months. I decided trying to dig up old outdated parts for that kind of money and short lifespan wasn't worth it and took it as a cue to build a new system, recycling what I could.

If you change the motherboard, you might have to reinstall Windows, or at least reactivate it. Device serial numbers and IDs will change, in a large enough amount that MS will detect it as a different system.

Same socket will fit the same CPU, and likely RAM. Check the card slots and anything else that he really needs for his devices. A mobo with thos connections will work.
